fresh mozzarella balls

I work in a school kitchen on a salad bar and wondered if anyone had any ideas

what to do with fresh mozzarella balls? The students hate them so I added pesto

to them, threw them in pasta salad but they still won't touch them.

I would suggest ditching the Mozzarella balls entirely. Cheese all by

itself whether in a ball form or otherwise is not healthy, especially

for teens. There should not be a trend toward feeding kids something

that will lead to a habit which could cause future heart problems ie

overdosing on cholestorols. So ditch them or find a way to incorporate

cheese into some other food that dilutes their effects.

Batter them or bread them and deep fry them? serve them with

ketchup or spagetti sauce? find a catchy name for them? Not the

healthiest but kids would go for something like this I am pretty

sure.

I absolutely love Mozzarella balls--they are also expensive so they

are an occasional treat. Usually in fancy restaurants, they are

served sliced marinaded with some really good quality tomato. You can

cut them up in very small [1/2 inch squares] so they don't know what

they are.

When I have put them in salads, [adult] people think they are tofu so

my guess is that the kids think they are tofu. And we know that most

kids are afraid of tofu, inappropriately, but that is part of the

meat-eating brainwashing that has gone on in our culture. I think

that a little education is in order--a sign by the dish that this is

the same cheese as is used on pizza, it is just not aged as long, or

something like that.

You can also serve them in hot dishes, but they tend to leech a lot of

water so you have to be careful.

I love fresh mozzarella! The classic way to eat it is in a caprese salad, which

is basically a composed salad of sliced tomatoes and sliced fresh mozzarella,

with a little basil, salt, pepper and olive oil drizzled on top. Yummy!

Other than that, make lasagna and use the little balls in that.

Why don't you heat some pasta sauce and put them in a sub roll with

pasta sauce over them? This is how I serve them to my nieces and

nephews. They love them, and so do I.

I think they are a lot healthier than a greasy burger topped with

cheese and mayo and fries or chips on the side.

Everyone thank you for your suggestions. kids can be so picky and since I have

so few herbs and things to add to them these simple suggestions will come in

handy. This morning I put Italian dressing with them along with tomato, celery,

onion and cucumber they took it a lot better.

I absolutely LOVE fresh mozzrerlla... My 3 yr old loves it too... and you know

what's rare if a 3 yr old will eat anything for more than one time...LOL... then

again, my 3 yr old daughter is the only child I've ever seen that will pick

fresh fruits and veggies over candy and stuff... but every now and then, she's

got to have that cookie...lol

Have you considered calling it " pizza cheese " ? Since it is in a form unfamiliar

to most of them, they may think it is something nasty. One of our grandsons is

living with us and he wouldn't touch string cheese but will eat mozzarella

sticks, lasagna, etc. Kids can be less than adventuresome when it comes to

eating. HTH, Jeanne in GA
