Guest guest
This year I have felt that my children should not eat meat at school anymore. Last year they ate the school lunches and ate most of the meat products they served. We are working towards a more vegan diet and my 5th grader is doing a healthy living thing at school. They sent home a sheet saying that we should eat or drink so many servings of dairy a day and that we should set goals so that we consume enough. This is disgusting to me. My child will not get an incentive prize because we dont use dairy at home. Talk about meat eating brainwashers. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of issue? Thanks Cherie
Guest guest
No, but you might point out that you do not eat meat in your household and tell them which food pyramid you do follow. After all, even in the meat eating world, the mediterranean diet is considered to be the healthiest diet to follow, and it is primarily a plant based diet. Have you talked to them yet? Guest guest
I think that what you would have to do in this situation is talk to the school about your son working on another project.. I am not vegetarian or Vegan so therefore if there is something like this at school I wouldnt have a problem.. YOU have to be open and honest with your diets or food lifestyle that you are living with the schools.. Most schools are very helpful and may give the child something else to work on for the same points. I dont think of them as Brainwashers really.. They have been doing things for years and other ways of eating are still new to schools.. Heck I have been visiting with the owner of this group for a year and I know that I still do not know everything.. I almost emailed her this morning to ask her a question about a recipe so that I didnt screw up.. I have problems with my kids school over things other than FOOD so I have to remember not to be so Quick to Jump on their buts for not letting me know how he is doing in class.. ok now Im rambling.. Just give them a chance.. Otherwise the only thing that I can say to you if you dont like it take them out and homeschool.. Guest guest
First of all, it's great that you're getting your kids to take part in the veg transition! That's exciting. Don't let this complication get you down! There are always ways to solve such problems, or at least to try. Unfortuately, schools and businesses don't always know what's best for kids, and will promote what they believe is " healthy " without looking at the facts behind the propoganda. It wouldn't be a bad idea to contact the school about it, like the others have been suggesting. Instead of showing them that you're angry, state your case by making suggestions. Tell them that you don't use dairy at home, and that many other people don't either, for a variety of reasons (Ethnic, dietary, allergy, weight loss, religious, etc). Do you use a substitute, like Rice, Almond or Soymilk? Even if you don't, explain that people get plenty of nutrients from it (maybe suggest a brand name or two, like Silk or RiceDream), and that many people who are lactose intolerant drink these alternatives as well. Suggest that they can " rewrite " their Healthy Living standards to include " Milks and Milk substitutes " for those who can't/choose not to consume dairy. That might get their attention and educate them at the same time. Sorry for the long post. Best of luck! -Courtney , " Cherie " <csulery wrote: > > This year I have felt that my children should not eat meat at school > anymore. Guest guest
Cherie they are not brainwashers, they just don't know or understand. My Mother is in a rest home and the dietician will still place Jello on her tray, she has no idea why that isn't vegetarian. Do you know how many vegetarians I have seen eating yogurt, StarBurst candy, the original flavor of Altoids with gelatin as an ingredient? Calm your temper when talking with them and just explain your situation. Remember we are the minority but we are growing each and every single day. Guest guest
I teach in a public school. In my school district we require a written statement from the physician for any dietary changes for medical reasons. The school district also has to follow state & federal guidelines too. Guest guest
Cherie, yes, the schools are geared towards the majority which is not vegetarian. i cannot believe your daughter will not get an incenive prize if she explains to her teacher that she is vegan. she can count so many servings of soy milk or similar instead of the dairy products. my 5th grade girl scouts are getting big lessons in nutrition & this is what i would do. if her teacher doesn't accept the acceptable substitutions, speak to the principal. i sincerely doubt there will be a problem. maybe your daughter could see that a segment on 'alternative to meat proteins' is included. i'll bet there are other vegetarians - maybe vegans - in the class. at the very least there will certainly be interested people. good luck & please let me know what happens.
