Guest guest
Hi Fraggle > there's drake's bay > the bering straits > hudson bay for henry hudson > lake champlain OK... so, not Francis Bay, Henry Bay, or whatever the other guys first names were > amerigo's writing were quite well known at the time of the 1507 map.... > and, unlike most folks at the time, he actually went by amerigo much more often the vespucchi.... Doesn't matter what name he used... he wasn't a royal, so there was no way that he would have been " honoured " as a royal. Naming a place after his first name would have been tantamount to treason. It just wouldn't have happened at all... and we are talking about a group of monks who lived in the mountains of the Anjou region so that they could get away from the world. The chances that they had come across the writings of Vespucci are fairly low (a large monastic library in the 15th century would have had 40 books - and this is a dinky monastery tucked away in the mountains). Far more likely that they were told about Vespucci by Rene, Duc d'Anjou who was the patron of the work, and not exactly the most reliable source of information. Guest guest
Hi Fraggle > columbia... > if you buy that christopher columbus was genoese Although, to be fair, Columbus wasn't the guys name... he was called Colon, and always signed his name as such. Seems much more likely that all the places with " Columb " in the name are named after the French Goddess of the same name, and Columbus is just a fortunate bystander whose name was almost, but not quite entirely, vastly different. Guest guest
Cristoforo Colombo is indeed the name we have learnt in history books in Italy but, beyond that, I wouldn't even dream of entering historical discussions with you and Peter!!!
