Vegan Vixens... Soy Vey

In a town where carrot juice, wheat grass and soy mocha lattes are commonplace,

it takes a lot to surprise us. However, KCAL's 9 On The Town did just that

tonight. The program spotlighted a group of veggie-minded ladies who call

themselves Vegan Vixens. Spearheaded by mother hen Sky Valencia, the group looks

more like a collection of campy Baywatch castaways than serious foodies.

Until recently, the crunchy Vegan lifestyle has been fairly commercial-free (if

not misunderstood). A notable celebrity exception is Alicia Silverstone, who

promoted the diet in her ill-fated NBC series Miss Match. However, it appears

that the Vegan Vixens are here to carry on the media torch (and spice things

up)... much to the chagrin of serious Vegans.

The Vixens claim to be doing this for " ethical " reasons, though the porn-style

poses they strike belied their words. Ditto for the slow-motion taste tests they

did on KCAL 9. We rarely spend that much time eating a chickenless tofu wing.

Then again, we rarely have that much fun. Perhaps there's something to the

Vixens after all.

For those who dig this ridiculous California-infused fun, The Vegan Vixen Show

now airs in Hollywood on Comcast Public Access Channel 24.

Hey, if it helps promote Vegan awareness, what's the harm? Especially if the

cheescake is dairy-free.

Well, that was indeed interesting, thanks Fraggle! There are worse

things in the world that scantily-clad women promoting veganism :-) LOL

Not my kind of thing. Also I don't think it works. The people who are

interested for the sex side will be interested only in the sex side, and not

at all in the vegan side. It won't change anyone at all. You are right

that PETA does the same sort of thing.

I really cannot imagine anyone taking any notice of the message.

After all Pamela Anderson is vegetarian so if your point worked then

surely all the men who are fans of Pamela Anderson would become

vegetarian.

I have had a look around their web site. It seems they are raising money for an

animal

shelter and producing a cook book, which is good. However I wonder if they are

into a

vegan lifestyle or just " diet " as the news feature implies. Someone could email

them about

whether the cosmetics and beauty products they use are all vegan. I'm too

shy...

Hi,

Personally I think young women and girls would be more likely to be influenced.

Psychological studies have found that the role models of the same gender have

more

influence.

When I was a teenager we had a lot of pin ups of Kate Bush, Debbie Harry, Annie

Lennox,

Siouxie Sioux etc. The boys wanted to sh** them, the girls wanted to *be* them!

Well they were famous among teens in my circle in the 1980s!

They are all " rock and pop " singers and were rather glamorous.

Now come on... you know who most of these are... Kate Bush of Wuthering

Heights fame, Debbie Harry from Blondie, Annie Lennox was Eurythmics (I

think), Siouxie Sioux from Siouxie and the Banshees....

So it is unlikely then that young girls will be emulating them.

Now come on... you know who most of these are... Kate Bush of Wuthering

Heights fame, Debbie Harry from Blondie, Annie Lennox was Eurythmics (I

think), Siouxie Sioux from Siouxie and the Banshees....

LOL - you know I do - I meant the scantily clad women in the video. My

point was that if they are not famous people, others are not likely to be

swayed to veganism by their antics.

That's alright - he knows I know them. One of Peter's friends doesn't like

any music apart from death metal .... and Kate Bush. Colin used to like

Blondie and the Eurythmics.

i disagree

i think ppl can be swayed by lotsa different causes/reasons

thats why PETA works in a certain way

they are not 100% successful, but their..antics..are aimed at a certain

crowd/mindset

Don't need no politician

Tell me things I ought to be

Neither no optician

Tell me what I ought to see

No one tells you nothing

Even when you know they know

They tell you what you should be

They don't like to see you grow
