Guest guest
Another reason I do it is to take up less space and use fewer resources. I recently learned about global footprinting when I was searching for ways to simplify my life. It was an interesting way of looking at the world. Plastic is still so hard to recycle (here, compared to the other things--I'm still trying to find a place for #5s and #6s) and yet it is one of those things we use so much of in the US. When I was in Germany several years ago, they still used a lot of glass. I wish they would make recycling easier so more people would do it and have to use little or no gas to do it. http://www.footprintnetwork.org/ Susan --- Peter <metalscarab wrote: > Hi Jo > > > We recycle, etc. etc. to save the world. Guest guest
I believe Germany is an excellent place for recycling. When we stayed there, there were different boxes by each house for the recycling to be put - this was many years before our councils had even heard of recycling. Guest guest
Recycling is wasteful if you can repair or re use the thing before you put it in the recycling bin. A few ideas: Large glass bottles to store home made juice or soya milk; Glass jars for home made pickle and spreads; Envelopes can be re-used with sticky labels and vegan biodegradable Sellotape; Newspapers can be re used at the cat and dog shelter, particularly if they have pictures of people you don't like on you can ask your doggie friends to poo on them if they feel the need; Plastic trays which salad veggies come in as grow kits for mustard and cress; Toilet roll inners in the compost bin; Plastic bags re-used at the shop; Corrugated card to make packaging for sending items by post; Plastic bottles can be re used for when out and about to carry a drink in or the large kind as mini greenhouses for seedlings... , Susan <oceanfest_2000> wrote: > > Another reason I do it is to take up less space and > use fewer resources. Guest guest
Excellent suggestions and I totally agree. I write letters to companies about refusing to buy a product that they have if there is excessive packaging. And then I follow through. Earth Balance, the vegan margarine, comes in a plastic container which I hate...try not to buy things in plastic. But, that is something that I have to do to get the stuff. However, I then keep it and store all sorts of stuff in it around the house and dry food stuff. Otherwise I just use glass. I will call the pet shelters here, there are two and see if they take the newspaper. That is certainly something I had never thought of. We have an excellent city recycling program here for the most part, but sometimes I have some questions about it so I would rather reuse too way before I recycle. We get a lot of paper bags here and I keep those to wrap packages to mail and I use them for the backing of frames to finish them when I am framing a new piece. (I have my own cloth bags, but many times underestimate how many I need and have to get the store bags too)There are also people who home brew and I save the glass bottles for them that the kids are always leaving here. I tried putting the cat litter in the garden beds after scooping out the lumps...that was a horrid failure...the beds smelled like urine for ever even after I tried to scoop it back up. Guest guest
The bottles are also handy in the garden if you cut the top 4 -5 inches off and plant the spout and neck in the soil then water your plants into the bottle , doesnt disturb the soil, and gets the water where it is needed. Guest guest
These are all good ideas. If you need to catch earwigs in the garden for removal to a different place, corragated cardboard works well--roll it into a tube and they will go in there at night. Bag them in the a.m. and move them. (The original instructions were to dispose of them in the garbage, but I wouldn't do that. There's a nice empty field nearby.) --- herbvalerian <herbvalerian wrote: > Recycling is wasteful if you can repair or re use > the thing before you put it in the > recycling bin. > A few ideas: > Large glass bottles to store home made juice or soya > milk; > Glass jars for home made pickle and spreads; > Envelopes can be re-used with sticky labels and > vegan biodegradable Sellotape; > Newspapers can be re used at the cat and dog > shelter, particularly if they have pictures of > people you don't like on you can ask your doggie > friends to poo on them if they feel the > need; > Plastic trays which salad veggies come in as grow > kits for mustard and cress; > Toilet roll inners in the compost bin; > Plastic bags re-used at the shop; > Corrugated card to make packaging for sending items > by post; > Plastic bottles can be re used for when out and > about to carry a drink in or the large kind > as mini greenhouses for seedlings... > > > , Susan > <oceanfest_2000> wrote: > > > > Another reason I do it is to take up less space > and > > use fewer resources. Guest guest
No, it isn't and it can be really dangerous to leave the feces in...that is why as I said below I scooped the lumps out first before putting into the flower beds as was suggested at the time by the company and various recycling sites. It was the urine though that was the smelly problem linda "Whatever you do will be insignificant and it is very important that you do it."Mohandas Gandhi linda's Growing Stitchery Projects: womyn47 - fraggle cat feces isn't the best thing for the garden....not to mention the spreading of parasites linda I tried putting the cat litter in the garden beds after scooping out the lumps...that was a horrid failure...the beds smelled like urine for ever even after I tried to scoop it back up.
