Guest guest
I was just reading today The Idiot's Guide to being a Vegan, pg 311. Learned a lot of stuff that I hadn't known. I knew that fur can be labeled as rabbit, fox, etc and if from China or other countries it could be from a dog or a cat. Nasty. However, leather manufacturers around the world sometimes use skins from other animal such as cats, dogs, horses, pigs, goats, sheep, deer in their production fo their leather products. Truth in labeling laws are virtually non-existent for leather products and those products are imported to the U.S. linda "Whatever you do will be insignificant and it is very important that you do it."Mohandas Gandhi linda's Growing Stitchery Projects: womyn47 - Christa Thursday, December 08, 2005 1:32 PM Animal Products as gifts Re: Dining out-rant Oh my, all this reminds me of when my mother gave me a RABBIT FUR scarf! I couldn't believe it, what was she thinking?? She was shocked, too - said "well it was so cheap, I figured it was fake!" Haha. It was so cheap because it was on clearance, so she couldn't take it back - I think she gave it to one of my nieces instead.

Guest guest
I don't really care what animal the leather is from or the fur, its still an animal's skin and hair and I won't buy it! Another thing is feathers. The sort in pillows, cushions, duvets/quilts. I was veggie for years before it dawnned on me... the feathers are from a dead bird! So strange how I just did not " get it " for so long! Its like my neighbour's daughter is 10. I was talking to her about shoes. She didn't know leather was animal skin! But I could relate to that because of the feathers. , " linda " <lindai81@c...> wrote: > > I was just reading today The Idiot's Guide to being a Vegan, pg 311. Guest guest
Oh, absolutely, I don't use anything that came from an animal regardless of whether or not they had to kill the animal to get it...wool for example. However, I didn't know about the leather thing from other animals rather than just from cows. I thought it was an important talking point when the issue of "do you wear leather shoes," an educational thing for those that are either just baiting us or really want to know. People will wear leather shoes blithely since they think that cows were made for that...a gift from the cow to them I guess. But they wouldn't want to wear a pair of shoes that might have come from a dog or cat. At the very least maybe they won't buy anything that was made outside the country...who knows. With everything seemingly being outsourced to countries where animals can be even more brutalized than they are here and people are wearing those items maybe they will at least bring their business back home and then it is up to us to get laws passed here that protect those animals here. Naively said of course. linda "Whatever you do will be insignificant and it is very important that you do it."Mohandas Gandhi linda's Growing Stitchery Projects: womyn47 - herbvalerian Friday, December 09, 2005 8:05 AM Re: Animal Products as gifts I don't really care what animal the leather is from or the fur, its still an animal's skin and hair and I won't buy it!
