Guest guest
I have just started reading a semi biographical/historical novel entitled Indian Peter By Douglas Skelton.( I think a man called horse was based on it). It tells the tale of how a ten year old from Aberdeen was indentured and taken to serve in North America, gets his freedom sets up his own cabin on land and is taken by Indians and forced to serve them as a slave.( a bit too much historical info for my liking in some parts ) some of the reported brutality by the Indians is also a bit too much. But it doesnt put the British and French in much of a good light either. Anyhoo, he escapes and joins the British Army to fight the French and their Indian allies and is taken prisoner of war. He is freed on a prisoner exchange and gets back to Scotland where he sets about going after the people who originally kidnapped him when he was 10. He becomes an entrepeneur and he developed Edinburgh's first Penny Post system, launched a weekly magazine and shamelessly exploited his experiences for profit. A well-known figure, especially in the law courts, his 1788 divorce case scandalised the city - and provided further fodder for his autobiographical pen. Guest guest
I am reading Watching the English by Kate Fox, an anthropologist. It's a great book about the 'rules' of Englishness. It is insightful and funny. I am also reading the latest Harry Potter (finally) and a book on recycling and reusing (It's called " reduce, reuse, recycle " ). I like to have different reading materials in different rooms, hence the variety :-) BB AlexOn 19/12/05, peter hurd <swpgh01 wrote: I have just started reading a semi biographical/historical novel entitled Indian Peter By Douglas Skelton.( I think a man called horse was based on it). Guest guest
don't want to read anything! I've just finished the fall semester at school. I was also in NYC visiting my mom for two weeks. I did not want to be there! it was 26 degrees! on the days that is was a high of 34 people were celebrating! I've forgotten what cold was like and wanted to come back home! I was walking stiff. my lips were bleeding. my eyes were running. my nose was running. I couldn't feel my ears. I slept with a sweater and socks. I must be braver next time I face MR. Cold
