Guest guest
Hi, As you know I have Lupus, well recently I was on another support group I belong to, and someone was asking why vitamin B12 defieciency happens in people with lupus. I referred them to a website http://www.vegetarian.org.uk/factsheets/b12factsheet.html about vitamin B12 and pointed out that in the elderly vitamin B12 is easier absorbed from fortified food than meat. Well this person came back at me like a tonne of bricks and started warning people on the support group not to give up meat!!! I was actually in hospital today having a panidronate infusion as I was on prednisolone in the past (a steroid used to treat lupus) which gave me osteoporosis. The pamidronate is to treat the osteoporosis. Two of the other patients and one of the nurses were drinking coke and eating crisps (at 10 a.m!). Don't people realise that if they have a health problem that they should eat a healthy diet? Also what got me going was the things on the radio when I woke up this morning. Item 1: Scientists in California did a study that says if you eat oily fish and other food rich in vitamin D3 you can cut your risk of cancer. Grrrrr... dont they know yet that the best way to cut your risk of cancer is to eat a wide range of fruit and veg? And what about all the toxins in the poor fish? Second item which I did not hear the detail of: many elderly people in nursing and residential homes in the UK are malnourished. For XXXXXXXXX's sake, are we in a third world country? I am having one of those " Yes, I', an Alien, I'm from the Planet Vega " days. Thanks for listning, Herb
Guest guest
Hi Herb, Hey, at least your planet has a name! Sorry to hear you had such a rough time. But please feel free to rant here anytime! Sometimes it helps just to have a sympathetic ear. Hope it gets better soon! Guest guest
Hi Herb It must have been an annoying day for you. I heard about the care homes in the UK too - it doesn't surprise me though, as a little while ago I heard about a very old vegan lady who wasn't being catered for, and offered only food containing meat and dairy. I don't think the human race improves at all over time - just goes round and round in circles.
