Guest guest
Hi Fraggle It's about a two hour drive to London, mainly because the traffic is so bad. On rare occasions it is gridlock and you cannot even make it into London. Our favourites in London are in Covent Garden where there is a Neal's Yard with a few small cafe's andmy favourite there is the vegan pizza. There is also the World Cafe which does delicious food - and lots of nice shops too :-) Jo - " fraggle " <EBbrewpunx Friday, January 13, 2006 12:35 AM wow...london > So, just picked up Time out London Eating & Drinking guide at work(and the pubs and bars book as well, but thats a different subject) > dang...there's a fair number of Veggie restuarants over thar > wot you english types complaining about? > (yes yes yes, i know, you don't live in london...) > (but, its a lil country..wot, it takes 5-10 minutes to walk west to east across it?) > (ducks and runs) > > > > > 1000 miles of endless screams, where all the dead heroes lay > I've got the choice to set my knife, I've got the courage to set my life > I've got the day I'll pick to die. Guest guest
Well, we would have to drive to the nearest town, which would take about 20 minutes, and then we would have to catch the train which takes either 40 minutes or 1 and a half hours depending on whether or not it is a stopping train. Then we would have to walk from Waterloo station to Covent Garden. I don't know how long that would take, but it's quite likely that Peter has done it. So if he can give me that information, and I would have to add an extra third of the time it took Peter, because he walks a lot faster than I do - then I could let you have the total time. Colin reckons it would take about 20 minutes. It would also cost us (assuming it was Colin and I) about £4.00 for the car park, and over £20 for the train fare, whereas if we drive up it might cost us nothing if we get a road parking space, or £9.50 if we use the car park at Bloomsbury Road. I suppose I could get a bus from Waterloo to Covent Garden, or an underground train. I don't know how long they would take, or how much they would cost. All in all though, if you are not in London for some other reason, it would be silly to make a trip there just to eat out, and not worth the bother. I reckon the Riverside Vegetaria in Kingston (which is outer London) is the best place to eat anyway. Guest guest
Hi Peter Thanks. My normal walking pace is a strolling pace - I've never been a fast walker - my mum used to moan at me for being slow! As for Colin - you know he always underestimates the time it takes to do things :-) So it would take 20 minutes plus a minimum of 40 minutes plus 45 minutes to get to Covent Garden - making a total of a minimum of 1 hour 45 minutes. Guest guest
There's an £8 congestion charge if you drive into London during the working week, but not after 6 p.m. or at the weekend. All the concerts and demos after weekends or after work. We went up once for a day out - to go on the London Eye, and that was the only time we have had to pay the charge. Guest guest
check out http://www.cclondon.com/index.shtml The congestion charge was introduced due to the permanent traffic jam in London and the resultant pollution. We went a couple of years back and we found it pleasant to travel by bus. The people on the buses were very friendly and one lady even got off at the same stop as us and took us to where we wanted to go! , " jo " <jo.heartwork@g...> wrote: > > There's an £8 congestion charge if you drive into London during the working > week, but not after 6 p.m. or at the weekend. Guest guest
Hi Herbal > The congestion charge was introduced due to the permanent traffic jam in London and the > resultant pollution. That's what they'd like us to think... it was actually introduced to make money! All they need to do to reduce the traffic jams is have a decent public transport system which doesn't cost a fortune to people travelling from outside London. To get to London from Guildford (about 20 miles away), it cost £18 about 4 years ago, so I'm guessing over £20 now, and the return trains stop at 11.30 at night... so if you're going on your own, they're cheaper than a car, but as soon as you have 2 people, even with the congestion charge cars are cheaper. It's particularly ironic that you can get an aeroplane from Bristol to Glasgow cheaper than you can get a train to go 20 miles!
