Guest guest
When we first moved in together we bought a fake tree and it's been used every year since then! This is just my personal opinion but I'd say get one with it's roots still on it then you can plant it in the garden after Christmas each year... if this isn't possible or you've got small children or animals then go with a fake one Stay Safe Mandy You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person. Guest guest
For religouse reason we always get a small real tree. A topper usually )as described above) We decorate it and use in our home with homemade ornemants like pine cones, cranberry and popcorn strings ect. On the last night of Yule we place it outside in our sacred space in our yard. We offer it to the what we call land spirits as an offering. And there it sits until the following yule. with nests added. Offering of food and such made to the land spirits on it. The following Yule it is brought back in and used as our Yule log. But if we didn't do that we would be buying a replantable tree. So we are pro live tree as long as your responsable. Guest guest
I love real christmas trees! Before I moved to the country, I used to buy one from the YMCA to support their programs (I wouldn't buy from a private lot). Now, we have a whole bunch of evergreens blocking the view of our house from the road - a safety concern. So instead of cutting them down all at once, we'll be using them for christmas trees every year until their are thinned out... that will take about 10 years. (keep in mind, that we have a 400ft driveway lined with evergreens on both sides and our 2 acre lot is also lined with evergreens and Manitoba maples, instead of a fence). I'm planting sugar maples and apple trees in the spring... the start of our retirement venture (organic maple syrup and apple orchard - I've got about 20 years before we start collecting sap). A little give and take keeps everything in balance Cheers! Denise Gontard Cartwright ----- From : Steph[mrswalp29] Sent : 11/9/2007 8:01:48 AM To : Cc : Subject : RE: fake or real? Guest guest
One year, the folks I was living with bought some good bright green felt (the kind that's meant for pool tables) and cut out a tree that was about six feet high. I loved that thing The felt was strong enough to hang lots of ornaments on it. I'm not sure what eventually happened to it, but I think we reused it for about five years without it showing any wear. Besides, there was something fun about telling people that I had to go iron my tree :^) Steph wrote: > Please don't send me hate mail..lol my husband and I are thinking about Christmas and wondering if it would be better on the environment to buy a fake tree instead of cutting one down each year. Guest guest
My mom bought my littlest a 3' fake tree with lights 2 years ago when she wanted a tree in the play area in the basement. My mom is a pretty indulgent grandma.....last year we used it though because we were painting and all our furniture was in the center of the room under a tarp, so we really didn't have room to put up a tree. This year we'll do both. amy ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

Guest guest
Two years ago we bought a live tree with the root ball and then planted it outside. The only downer was, we are used to putting our tree up on Thanksgiving weekend and keeping it up until New Year's eve. With the live root tree, we could only keep in indoors 10 days max without causing harm. So, now we use a very pretty artificial tree. Pamela akfral wrote: In a message dated 11/9/2007 8:02:17 A.M. Guest guest
Wow, Penny! Maybe it's a cultural thing, but most of us don't put our pine tree in our couch! I wonder where that custom came from? :-D Sharon Penny French wrote: > I honestly haven't considered it from the environmental angle, just from my > one and only experience with a " real " tree. Guest guest
LOL! Our living room was really weird, kind of long and narrow. The only place to put the couch was under the front window and the only place to put the tree was the corner next to the couch! Anywhere else it would have been too close to our only source of heat - a wood burning stove, and that was NOT a good idea! Guest guest
I love the fake trees. Their arms are strong enough to hold most any size ornaments and with us having ours up for 5-6 weeks, we don't have any wilt or drying out to worry about. Also those fresh trees cost a lot and once you spend the money on a pretty artifical tree you will have it for years to come, with no extra expense each year. Ours are over 15 years old and still look great! Oh I love Christmas and all the decorations. My home has a touch of Christmas in every room. Such a joyful time of year. Guest guest
I always wait until 2 weeks before Christmas before getting my cut tree..That is because I worry about fire..I also live in an area where they bring in fresh cut, so I do get that and not one that has been sitting on the lot for a month.. We have started watching the Christmas movies, but I will wait until Dec. to decorate.. Karen
Guest guest
I generally use a fake tree. I tried a real one and it did not work for me. I use hand painted ornaments on my tree. Some of which I have had since my daughter was a baby. It is kind of like a family tradition.

Guest guest
4 years ago, when I bought this wooded acre lot, I decided to do the old fashion thing and cut down a tree out of my yard. We have lots of spruce trees and one was even a nice shape. Hubby and I cut the tree and hauled it up the hill to the house and let it stand in the garage overnight for all the snow to melt. At this point of the story, I need a bit of explanation. For any of you who don't know, I live in Alaska and it gets very cold and snowy outside during the winter. The next day I brought the tree into the house and cut off the top 5or 6 inches to make it fit. I decorated it and it was beautiful. I was having lots of Christmas company and my out of state daughter and the grand kids were coming, so I got the tree up a bit earlier than usual, probably about the 10Th. The day after Christmas we got up and noticed something different about the tree. That silly tree did not know it was dead, because it had been dormant when cut. After two weeks in the nice warm house with plenty of water, it was trying to grow and filled the house with spruce pollen! Until that time, I did not know that one of the seasonal allergies that plague me every spring was spruce pollen! Oh was I sick. I got hives and rashes and an asthma attack, too. I learned my lesson. I only use an artificial tree now. Katie wwjd <jtwigg wrote: I love the fake trees. Guest guest
I would love to invest in a fake tree to save trees plus help with my son's allergies but I worry that it is such a tradition and the smell in the house is so lovely. I hate the vacuuming for sure and the cost last year we paid $30 to cut one down and it only lasts a couple weeks. But the tradition of it all my kids take turns cutting down the tree and we always try to find one with a birds nest in it for good luck. One year we saw a bunny under the tree. I'm such a nature freak. If we had a place to plant a live tree I would do that in a heartbeat even if it only lasted 10 days then again winter in December here in Vermont well good luck digging a hole. Lots to think about It is a hard choice. Thanks for all your stories they were great. =^.^= Steph
Guest guest
I switched 2 years ago to a fake....4 ft prelit tree and I love it! I put it on my cedar chest in the sunroom as really I don't have any good spot for it otherwise. My DIL thinks all fake trees are ...just wrong but ....I love them. THey are there when I am ready to put them up and they are great till I am ready to take them down! we did go hunt down a tree for a few years wtih the kids and that was fun too, but now we are mostly empty nesters and frankly, it usually falls on mom to do it anyway, this way I dont have to be a martyr while I wait for someone to go into the attic and haul down the stuff...i keep the tree IN the cedar chest and all the ornaments in there too! perfect! ( martha stewart k mart , oh and it has red berries and some frosting...it looks great till i get the ornaments on! ) " Controlling the minor details of your own life will have a ripple effect to the far reaches of your universe. Guest guest
We always got a real tree. About 3 years ago, we were about to leave to " Christmas tree shop " and my youngest son told me that he thought he was allergic to real trees in the house. That every year, he would have a sore, scratchy throat and his eyes bothered him, but it would go away after we took the tree down. Now I was feeling a bit unfit for not noticing this, but you have to know my son...anyway, we got a fake tree that year. No allergic symptoms and I love being able to put it up sooner and take it down when we want. ~Barb
Guest guest
I too love a real tree and real garland in the house but we made the switch a few years go to a georgous pre-lit tree too. No pine needles, sap or watering, not nearly the fire hazard and the branches are sturdier, the lights amazing..... We can now put it up the day after Thanksgiving and it stays beautiful the entire time. We also made the decision AFTER Christmas one year so were able to shop the 75% off sales.... We bought a large one. The box is long and heavy so keep that in mind for getting it home and storage. No idea the pros and cons on environment?!
