Guest guest
Laura Funny you should bring this up. YES, I have had cravings - hadn't thought about the cycle timing - but I think it runs about 1/2 way through the cycle. I have the same repulsion to the thought of eating meat. PROTEIN helps me. The meat craving happened to me last week and so I whipped up a batch of (almost) sugar free chocolate tofu pudding and then I was just fine. I ate the equivalent if 1/2 a box of tofu though - that was in addition to the protein I had that day - not instead of...Good question, I am interested in the answers! PS: pudding recipe is on my blog: www.vegan-vittles.blogspot.com Beth On 3/5/07, Laura <redmountaindragon wrote: > > Hello - this is for those of you who have recently become vegetarians > because it just won't > relate to those of you raised vegetarian. > > We became vegetarians in October of 2006. Guest guest
I used to get cravings, but there are usually " substitutes " for what I crave for. We became vegetarians in October of 2006. So, I haven't had meat in over a year, and I was a big meat eater, having been raised that a meal isn't a meal unless it has meat. The past several months I have been having extreme cravings that run congruent to my cycle. Once a month, I get this craving to have a huge Arby's Roast Beef Sandwich. And I know all the cruelty the animals suffer and the horrendous things that go into the animals used for food, but the cravings are so strong I have to not go out for fear I will succumb to my cravings and drive through Arby's to get my fix. Has anyone else ever had these cravings? It really reinforces my idea that food can be an addiction and why many people simply will not give up their meat. People know an alchohal or drug addiction is bad, but yet they do it until they can get help, if they seek it. But the meat addiction is socially acceptable, so people don't feel the need to break from it. I'd love to hear others' opinions. Guest guest
For me, the hardest time is when I am rushed and it is just easier to fall back on old habits (ie, grabbing a hamburger in the drive thru or whatever). I really had a hard time this weekend because the newness was wearing off and I was getting tired of being so inconvenienced. I got through by remembering WHY I became veg in the first place. Going back over those websites (meat.org) and re-reading all the reasons (like in Vegetarian for Dummies) really helped. I kept making the right choice, and when the craving past, I was SO glad I did. Meat substitutes during that time would be great. Just to get you past those cravings. Now, sugar I am having a much harder time with! Suggestions for sugar would be nice! Guest guest
I craved Big Macs after I became a vegetarian. I wanted one so bad!!! But I never gave in because I taught myself to look at meat and see a cow hung by its legs and bleeding. Gross, huh? It worked because I never, ever gave in. After a while I didn't even look at a Big Mac as food anymore... much less something I'd want to eat!! I think if I saw a Big Mac in person today I'd throw up. Looking at meat makes me sick. I used to be a big time meat eater too... same as you, a meal wasn't a meal without a big slab of meat. I was not even 13 when I became a vegetarian and my family was not exactly thrilled at my choice!! I ate very little other than canned vegetables and ramen noodles for several years till my mom finally realized that I wasn't going to outgrow my choice. Try a portabella philly cheese steak sandwich. I made those and they're REALLY good, and they might just fix your craving. If you want the recipe I can find it for you. Guest guest
i struggled with cravings mainly when i was pregnant. i really wanted comfort food because i could not imagine keeping anything else down and i was so miserable. i wanted steak and potatoes, fried chicken, my grandmother's peel-free mashed potatoes with giblet gravy and cream, my stepmother's corned beef and cabbage...the most disgusting, fat-laden stuff you can imagine. i totally gave in to those cravings with my first pregnancy (i was just an omni, trying to be vegetarian, when i got pregnant with my first), and i ended up eating nothing but fast food for the majority of my third trimester. it was really bad. you know " super-size me " ? i basically did that for 3 months - and i was pregnant. ba-a-a-a-a-ad idea. i always say i'm surprised my son wasn't born with 2 heads. with my second pregnancy, i craved those things mainly in the first trimester. i wanted all the same stuff - burgers and fries, taco bell tacos... thank goodness for meat substitutes. usually i won't touch the stuff because it's so processed, but i ate a ton of it for this past pregnancy - cheese substitutes, ground beef, tofurkey slices... i even gave in in the last trimester and ate some of that morningstar farms crap made with eggs and dairy, because i was going to kill someone if i didn't eat some buffalo wings. and i ate cheese in the last month too, because the ONLY thing i could imagine eating was cheese with grapes. just that combination, nothing else. i had some and got really sick. my stomach wasn't used to it after almost 2 years whole-foods organic vegan. so that was that. honestly, i think this is a GREAT time to be veg because there are so many substitutes for your every addictive craving (except, evidently, anything that is even remotely like corned beef). i completely agree that it is an addiction. i recently made friends with a woman who is hitting me up for all kinds of natural-lifestyle information. i referred her to " food revolution " and it's really opening her eyes. she called me the other day and said that she would really like to make an attempt to go vegan, but she doesn't know where to begin. i talked to her for quite a while about our diet and the standard things we eat. she is so excited. but i did give her a warning. i told her that for most of her life, she has been ingesting massive amounts of chemicals, and her body in many ways is dependent on those chemicals. so for the first few weeks, assuming she takes the full plunge into veganism, she is likely to feel REALLY crappy while her body detoxes. i used that term, too, because i believe whole-heartedly that that is just what happens - your body has to come down off of antibiotics, steroids, hormones, pesticides, the whole lot. when i went vegan it felt very much like detoxing. i was irritable, i had to go to the bathroom all the time, some really weird stuff happened to my bowels (sorry for TMI), i got crappy sleep and i craved gross foods like mad. then i got over this three-week hump, saw all of my health problems very suddenly dissipate, got an extreme surge of energy that lasts to this day, my mood balanced out, my cycle normalized, all of that. so yes, it IS an addiction. and just like everyone who has ever come down from alcohol or drugs or sugar knows, once an addict, always an addict. from time to time, you'll have cravings. it's normal, and it will pass. good luck and congrats on making such a change! chandelle'

I'm like you now though, we don't go to McDonald's for anything at all. Icky place!!! Silly thing, this comes to mind every time I think of McDonald's. Guest guest
Scott, congratulations, great observations. RE the nail biting ... you are no longer leaching calcium from your system, therefore you no longer are willing to eat yourself alive in order to try to get some calcium. Also, you may have made some corresponding emotional shift(s) related to self-abuse, moving instead toward self-care. Or something of similar ilk. Choose what you put into your head. Stop reading things that trigger cravings!!! Best, Elchanan On Behalf Of ScottTuesday, July 31, 2007 12:03 PM Subject: cravings I was really skeptical that I would get cravings for cooked and sweet foods, but wow, I am getting them big time. I should have read "12 Steps to Raw Foods" before I decided to go on the diet; and not at the same time. The book mentions too may foods and is triggering my brain to think about them. I have not given in though; and I don't plan to. The addiction chapter is really good though.I am definitely feeling happier, and more energetic since I have been on this diet. My memory seems to be improving too. Some strange things are happening. For example, I have always been a compulsive nail biter, I have never made an attempt to stop. For some reason I have stopped without any conscious effort, or thoughts of doing so. My nails are grown and look much better than when chewed.....lol It is nice because I can easily peel the skins off almonds before I eat them. ScottDon't under estimate the wisdom of nature. Guest guest
Oddly enough I am also craving odd things, which I would not normally crave. For example, tonight we took the kids to the playground, and I eagerly walked over to a maple tree and began picking maple leaves for a light snack. So now I am on my way to learning as much as possible about identifying wild edible plants.--ScottDon't under estimate the wisdom of nature.--- Elchanan wrote:"Elchanan" <ElchananRE: cravingsTue, 31 Jul 2007 18:13:04 -0700 Scott, congratulations, great observations. Guest guest
I've been craving bar-b-que & was feeling a little sorry for myself. Then I realized that it wasn't so much the meat that I was wanting. It was the hickory smoked sauce, lol! I cooked a pot of rice today & ate it with the hickory flavored sauce. It satisfied my craving! And barbequed rice probably sounds strange to some of you, I'll bet!! It would sound weird to my husband so I won't tell him what I ate today!
