Guest guest
Time for our Question of the Week - What is your favorite way to celebrate Thanksgiving and all there is to be thankful for? With my 2 children and my daughter's longtime boyfriend and their beautiful daughter - and we're thankful that we're all close and still speaking to each other! What is a day like in your house on Thanksgiving or where ever you gather to celebrate it? This will be a new one for us this year. Since Cybill (my daughter) was small, maybe even before she was born, I've done that Thanksgiving dinner by myself. This year she wants to take it on, about the same age I was when I took over. So we'll be working on it together at her house this year. But we always used to put the Christmas decorations up while the turkey and all cooked until last year when it just about killed me - not sure how we'll handle it this year. Maybe the day before if I can find enough Christmas stuff to get me in the mood! Also do you do potlucks and what are vegetarian family traditions that are a must have on the menu? We've never done potlucks. In the 3 years I've been vegetarian now, we just loaded up on the sides. But this year due to a shortage of Tofurkey in our area and now a concern about whether Quorn would be safe for me to eat even if we could find it (I'm deathly allergic to penicillin so...), I'm going to attempt a version of a homemade small tofurkey for myself. I'm adding minced portabella mushrooms, poultry seasoning and liquid smoke for flavoring. If it works, I'll share the recipe! Happy Thanksgiving Everyone, Judy And a happy Thanksgiving to you too! We usually travel to Florida to be with my siblings family and my mom for Thanksgiving. We've done this for many years. This will be the first one at home in a very long time, but we will still have a very special day. When we celebrate Thanksgiving in Florida with my family, we all arrive at least by Wednesday or at the latest on Thursday morning and stay in a rented huge house. We are all busy in the kitchen preparing food, kids are usually doing crafts, playing games, watching movies, playing basketball, shuffleboard or mini golf there. On Friday my sisters and one of my nephews head out early to catch all the specials at the stores. We are gone by 5a.m. and don't arrive back until late afternoon and have a blast. The guys and kids go and pick fresh citrus for all of us to take home, eat leftovers and play games. Many times our family stays over until the next week with my mom and head over to enjoy Disney World or other theme parks in the area, on their slowest week of the whole year, which starts on the Monday after Thanksgiving. Best time to go there. What is a day like in your house on Thanksgiving or where ever you gather to celebrate it? We run out and get a newspaper to make our stradegy for hitting the store the next day, watch the Macy's Thankgiving Day Parade, cook and eat!!! By the way, we already have up our Christmas Tree and have been really enjoying it. Will put up the other Decorations on Thanksgiving weekend. Also do you do potlucks and what are vegetarian family traditions that are a must have on the menu? Either Cornbread Stuffing with Frichik or Prosage and Jalopeno Stuffing and Cranberry Sauce Fudge, Pumpkin Pie, Cheese ball with crackers, My moms homemade fruitcake, Pecan, Mince and Apple Pies. Guest guest
My parents live all of five minutes away so it isn't exactly over the river and through the woods, but it's a heck of a trip nonetheless. I bring half the meal, covering the bases for the vegetarians among us. We watch the Macy's parade, gab, and do a lot of eating. We start with hordervous. I don't do Black Friday (I don't have the health to keep up with the crowds) but my mother and sister go out super early so they will generally pick up a good deal or two for me if I ask. Guest guest
I don't want this to sound like a pity party, but my husband and I have no " blood " family left. Our best friend's children call us Auntie and Uncle. So when we have the holidays that are family type of occasions, we generally spend the time together. Some of the nicest Thanksgivings that we have had is to spend the day eating (I make a full dinner) and watching movies in bed, and often the pets join us. We snuggle and if we fall asleep it is fine. It is very relaxing. I guess that is one of the best things about our holidays, we don't feel that " Holiday frenzy " that so many of our friends have to deal with. This year, my husband thought of going out to eat and maybe going to a movie. (Not sure if any theaters in our area will be open.) jlgfellers <jlgfellers wrote: My parents live all of five minutes away so it isn't exactly over the river and through the woods, but it's a heck of a trip nonetheless.
