Guest guest
Good morning everyone. I hope you are all staying warm. I have a question for you. Is sugar free jelly a vegetarian friendly product? Someone asked me this today and I was not sure, so I turned to this group. Everyone always is so quick to answer and give me any information that I need. Thanks!! Hugs, Mindy
Guest guest
Good Morning Mindy, Does the jelly have gelatin in it? Most gelatin has animal products. If it's congealed with a vegetarian product it probably will mention that. My grandmother used to tell me that Kosher products might also be vegetarian friendly. She used to say 'Kosher means pure.' Maybe others on the list can shed some light on that information. Guest guest
You just need to look at the ingredients. Things like gelatin in it, would make it NOT vegetarian. Guest guest
Most jelly is congealed with Pectin, which if fine, but you might find one brand that uses gelatin in it. You just have to read ingredients on the jar of the one you are looking at. Kosher does not mean animal free. It is the way an animal is killed and then it is drained free of blood. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kosher_foods Judy - Donna Ellis Friday, January 25, 2008 10:21 AM Re: Vegetarian Friendly? Guest guest
Yup, it's cool. Here's the list of ingredients for Smucker's Red Raspberry Preserves as stated on the site: WATER**, RED RASPBERRIES+, POLYDEXTROSE**, MALTODEXTRIN**, FRUIT PECTIN, LOCUST BEAN GUM**, NATURAL FLAVOR**, CITRIC ACID, POTASSIUM SORBATE (PRESERVATIVE), SUCRALOSE (NON NUTRITIVE SWEETENER)**, CALCIUM CHLORIDE**, RED 40**, BLUE 1 So unless locust bean gum comes from real locusts and not the tree pod....noooooo, it doesn't, just joking, but yes, unless the label stated that it contained gelatin it is ok. Gelatin, though, is made from hides and hooves and bones unless it is agar agar or another vegetable based gelling agent. Hope this helps! Guest guest
Thank you everyone that responded to me. I will continue to read labels when I buy products that I am unsure of. I also now know why gelatin is not a vegetarian friendly product. I also wondered about that. I'm so glad to part of this wonderful group. Thank you so much for having me. Guest guest
Jello or jelly? I've never had a problem with JELLY having animal ingredients, but most JELLO (unless you can find the special cozy shack kind) had\s Gelatin in it, so it is not so friendly. : ) , treazure noname <treazured wrote: > > Yup, it's cool. Guest guest
Koolaide gels and Hunts gels don't have gelatin in them and stay gelled at room temp. It comes already made in little 4 pk cups. They are beside the pudding 4pk cups. I bought some peanut butter once that is was called natural peanut butter and lo and behold it had raw egg whites in it and had to be refrigerated after opening. I didn't realize this until I got home and used some.......... now why would they put that in there? lol It was only brand that had it in it, when I went back to the store and checked. Can't remember the name of it now, as that was over a year ago. For a lacto-ova vegetarian, this isn't a problem unless you don't like eating raw eggs(which I didn't lol). Thank goodness for delicious Veganaise to replace Mayo, that is vegan and has no raw eggs in it...... Now this is one great product! If you've never tried it, give it a try. It is a refrigerated item that most health food stores carry. http://www.followyourheart.com/vegenaise.php Judy
