Hi everyone,

Today marks one month for me of being a vegetarian and I cant believe

how much better I feel. My husband LOVES meat and was cooking hamburger

tonite and the smell made me sick, literally. That's the first time

that has ever happened to me and I was kind of surprised by it. He has

cooked hamburger several times in the past month and I never had that

kind of reaction. I couldnt even be in the kitchen and got kind

of " crabby " about it. Does anyone else have a spouse who isnt a

vegetarian? Honestly, if he wants to eat it thats his choice, but I

dont know if I can handle the smell if it happens again. He claims it

was " all in my head " but it really wasnt, the smell made me sick.

Anyone else have that problem????

My husband is a carnivore, but for the most part, what I cook, he eats. In

general he really likes the variety of vegetarian dishes and and he enjoys the

flavors and combinations. Besides that, he hates to cook.

Hi...

I've always been a veggie..so I don't know it that makes a difference

but like you the smell of meat cooking really makes me feel ill.

I especially have a problem with bacon and roast chicken - other stuff

aint so bad.

I also have a partner whos a carnivore. Generally I do most of the

cooking and he's really happy with that. On nights when I'm not going

to be around he really enjoys being able to plan and cook something with

meat for a change.

When it comes to the odd morning he makes bacon generally he respects

that I can't stand the smell and makes the whole breakfast - veggies

bits and all so that I don't have to be in the kitchen.

I guess we've just adapted! :-)

Nice to find someone like me though!

My partner eats meat. When we were considering sharing a house I said

I probably should continue to live alone since I do not like people

cooking meat in 'my kitchen'. Meat being cooked in it makes it feel

like not my kitchen. I do not tell anyone what to eat or not to eat,

but I must feel like the kitchen in my home is my kitchen, or else it

does not feel like my home either. Very simple. Of course, I became a

vegetarian about 23 years before I met him....so it was a preexisting

condition you see.

So our compromise is that any meat is cooked outside, grilled,

usually. So he has a gas grill and a coal grill in the patio. When he

want to cook meat (it is rare, we eat the same stuff most of the time

for dinner at least) he uses a clean part of the grill or a different

grill to grill seitan or tofu for me. Meat cooking outside the house

does not bother me. No greasy residue clinging all over the walls and

my pots and pans...

Anyway, everyone need to reach their own compromise if they have an

omnivore partner. Our solution would not work for everyone, but it

works for us. Congratulations on your fist month and good luck

finding a solution that works for you!

You're not alone, My husband is also a non-veg. I don't cook meat so when I

cook everyone eats vegetarian. About twice a week he cooks for himself (my

daughter won't touch it either). It used to make me sick to smell it cooking -

literally! He used to wait until I went to my lady's Bible study and then cook

his meat and try to air out the house before I got home. He got a grill for

Christmas so now he grills outside (we live in Oklahoma so most of the winter

is fairly mild) and I don't have to smell it cooking. He is very considerate

of my feelings and I try not to " preach " to him either. But, no, it's not just

your imagination - the smell makes me sick too!

Hi Kellie

My husband and children are all not vegetarian too. When meat is cooked in our

house it always smells rancid to me. I actually have to ask my husband or oldest

son if it is any good but, it doesnt make me nautious, unless I am pregnant and

that has all been taken care of lol.

You might try running an exhaust fan, if you have one, or open a nearby window

a little. I know it winter in most places but it should help with getting the

smell out and then of course you can close the window.

Hope you have continued success in your vegetarian journey, Jenn

Yes, I am a new vegetarian and am dealing with the difficulties of

having an omnivore in the house.

I have had a few setbacks when I think that it's so much trouble. I'm

going to have to figure out how to handle this situation so that I can

stick to my own convictions while respecting that my family wants

meat. I'm working on

making vegetarian dishes that everyone will enjoy so that nobody will

care when I kick meat out of the house for good. So far, my husband

has been agreeable.

On a side note, I think that my husband is really proud that I've

stopped eating meat. Isn't that funny that he doesn't want to do it,

but is really interested in the fact that I have? I told him yesterday

that I didn't think I could do it anymore and I could tell that he was

disappointed. Funny.
