Guest guest
Good Afternoon Everyone, I had a few questions regarding storing fresh veggies. What are the best ways to keep them? I have been told to wrap my celery in foil and keep it in the fridge, but what about everything else. Onions in the frig or not? What about peppers? Basically anyways to store any type of veggie is what I am asking. Thank you and I can't wait to learn more from all of you. Guest guest
Mindy, the only one I would be emphatic about is tomatoes. Do not store them in the fridge, they get mealy. Where I store depends on how warm or cold it is. Right now it is pretty cool, so i keep onions, potatoes and garlic in my storage bins (outside the fridge just in my pantry), I keep tomatoes, peppers and eggplants (when I am eating those) in baskets outside the fridge. I always store green, celery, apples and most other fruit inside the fridge, but i keep my citrus outside. Carrots inside fridge, winter squash outside. If it gets very warm inside the house (no AC) then things go in the fridge with the exception of the tomatoes. , " Mindy-n-Shawn " <hunnybunns4233 wrote: > > Good Afternoon Everyone, > > I had a few questions regarding storing fresh veggies. Guest guest
I bought cloth at walmart, like old flour sacks...just white diapers basically. After my lettuce and other veggies are washed and spun, I wrap them in that and then place them in green bags or just place it in the drawers. The cloth helps absorb excess moisture, yet keeps them from drying out. I can keep lettuce over a week...but we usally eat it all up anyway. Guest guest
Tomatoes also loose a lot of flavor when they are refrigerated. But they go bad if kept on the counter very long, too. Katie
Guest guest
Hi, I have a lot of trouble especially with my red and orange peppers, but in regards to onions, I wrap them in aluminum foil and that is the best thing I have ever done. My brother found out about that from a friend of his. This week I read that one thing not to do is wash the stuff before you store it, just wash before you use it as water is the culprit there. It is helping so far with my peppers which I then seal up in saran wrap. Barbara Barbara J. Gordon
