St David Factfile There aren't many facts about St David; but here are the only undisputed ones. He really existed He was at the heart of the Welsh church in the 6th century He came from an aristocratic family in West Wales His mother was a saint, Saint Non His teacher was also a saint, St Paulinus He founded a large monastery in West Wales He was one of the early saints who helped to spread Christianity among the pagan Celtic tribes of Western Britain He became Archbishop of Wales, but remained in his community at Menevia (now called St Davids) He was active in supressing the Pelagian heresy His shrine became a great place of pilgrimage; four visits to the shrine at St David’s was considered the equivalent of two to Rome, and one to Jerusalem! Guest guest
Hi folks I know nothing at all about St David... but since one of the suggested facts is that he founded a monastery, it should be pretty easy to prove one way or the other by finding the monastery Cartulary.... can't personally be bothered, but I'm pretty sure Cardiff record office would be able to dig out a copy. Without having seen anything other than these e-mails, I'd have to say that I can't imagine why it would be said that he founded a monastery if he didn't as it would be easily provable one way or the other, so on the scant info I have, I'd tend toward accepting his existence as real (OK, Peter, breath deeply... I know I don't agree with you very often....) There are relatively few saints who weren't "real", and those that weren't are almost exclusively based on local gods - such as St Brigid. Guest guest
you know,..thats not really fair Peter..i figured this was just yer cup of tea from the BBC Emergence of Wales St David 590 Stone carving depicting St David The monks of the period 500 to 600 were less learned and more ascetic than those of Illtud's tradition. David, the best known of them, was a tee-total vegetarian and an advocate of unremitting physical labour. His monastery on a promontory pushing out to the sea at the furthest point of south-west Wales was well placed to be a major centre of Celtic Christianity; indeed, St David's may well have been as much Irish as it was Welsh. David died on March 1 somewhere around the year 590. Six hundred years later, there were at least 60 parish churches dedicated to him, extending from St David's to Herefordshire, and from Gower to the upper Severn Valley. By then, the region of the dedications constituted the diocese of St David and covered almost half the surface area of Wales. As the feast day of St David's was celebrated in more parishes than that of any other saint, he naturally became the patron saint of Wales. He was primarily an abbot. He may also have been a bishop, but later claims that he was an archbishop with authority over the other bishops of Wales are without foundation. The Welsh form of his name - Dewi - is a southwestern dialect form of the Welsh, Dafydd. Out of respect for David, Dafydd became so popular a name that it probably gave rise to the nickname, Taffy.
