Guest guest
hi peter, scheme is a dirty word here in the us, I am glad that it is not in the uk. I have an old book from 1884, which I found in the garbage of an old man who died in my mom's building in NYc, It smells like an old book. if I am allowed to be materialistic for a moment.. It is one of my most prized possesions. it is an encyclopedia called Chambers from Edinburgh. Defines Americanism as (i am copying from the book) as peculiarities in words and phrases not current in England. book-store for Book Sellers Shop is a corruption. 'It would hardly be an exageration to say that every person has his own private vocabulary'. There is harldy any recognized standard of speech. The verb To Fix, is made to do duty for expressing every conceivable kind of action. The vague use of this word is common all over the union but in the West the abuse is carried to the extreme. I find this funny. , " Peter Kebbell " <metalscarab wrote: > > Hi Anouk > > There's also a scheme in the UK (so I assume other places as well), where > you can donate old phones for use in 3rd world countries :-) > > BB > Peter >

Guest guest
hi peter, scheme is interchangeable with scam or planned trick. especially in nyc, where I am originaly from, they say something, like so and so had a scheme of selling used cellphones on the street to people and passing them of as new. , " Peter Kebbell " <metalscarab wrote: > > Hi Anouk > > >scheme is a dirty word here in the us, I am glad that it is not in > >the uk. > > Why? Guest guest
As in the Oxford English Dictionary - why have Americans chosen the second meaning? Jo scheme . noun 1 a systematic plan or arrangement for achieving a particular object or effect. 2 a secret or underhand plan; a plot. 3 a particular ordered system or pattern: a classical rhyme scheme. - " Anouk Sickler " <zurumato Thursday, May 04, 2006 8:58 PM Re: recycling old cell phones hi peter, scheme is interchangeable with scam or planned trick. especially in nyc, where I am originaly from, they say something, like so and so had a scheme of selling used cellphones on the street to people and passing them of as new. , " Peter Kebbell " <metalscarab wrote: > > Hi Anouk > > >scheme is a dirty word here in the us, I am glad that it is not in > >the uk. > > Why? Guest guest
Hi Fraggle >why do you call a cigarette a term that on this side o the pond is used to denigrate gays? The origin of " fag " in that respect pre-dates American colonisation - it is a hypercoristicon of " faggot " which was used as a derogatory term for homosexuals as early as the 14th century.... it's origin is in the burnings of heretics - when heretics were burnt at the stake, homosexuals were often tied up and stuck on the base of the fire, like a faggot... hence the origin of the word.
