Guest guest
My name is Jill..39 yo. Due to medical problems my beloved P.A.C. suggested going vegetarian and eventually vegan. Starting off with a dextoxification really has helped me even though those days were the most awful that I can remember in a very long time. Due to work constraints, I wasn't able to accomplish my goal and I really only feel half cleansed. Does anyone have any hints or personal info to share? I do strongly suggest for any newbie sloughing off the need to eat things that are bad for you to research and undergo a detoxification. I don't think I could have went from " Yeah!!! a Big Mac " to making smart choices and not feeling like I was suffering by 'doing without', by not undertaking the fasting and detox process. Glad to be a part of the group.
Guest guest
Jill - I think you will find wonderful advice and support within this group. Hang in there. I can tell you it may require a great deal of discipline. I personally had a hard time giving up a LOT of the things I now know were bad for my body. I took the pressure off by saying to myself, " if I really want something, I'll just have it. " Now, I am eating 95% No Wheat (except sprouted), No Dairy, No Sugar, LOW Sodium, No meat, No Alcohol, No caffeine. What I did at first was to try going Cold Turkey. That worked with the caffeine for example, but then I was slipping with the cheese, or the salty chips. So I decided NOT to give up everything at once. I did one thing at a time. AND I gave myself permission to have anything I wanted on Saturdays - a cheeseburger - ice cream - a beer - ANYTHING. After working so hard to eat healthy during the week. I went crazy the first Saturday - and then felt like shit, physically. Now when Saturday rolls around I hardly even WANT to eat anything I don't eat during the week. As my friend said, your body starts to crave what's in it. I have never done a DETOX or FAST. Low Blood sugar makes fasting difficult for me. I can tell you that completely overhauling your diet to a Vegan - even mostly Vegan diet will do the detoxing for you. Once you are eating SO healthy - then an OCCASIONAL slice of pizza when out with friends or scoop of ice cream isn't going to kill you - just don't overdo it and try to make those treats organic. Once last thing that helps me tremendously: I have a very close friend who is also on this same journey. We talk about things nearly every day -share new discoveries at the market, go to a Vegan restaurant together, buy each other cookbooks. It helps to have a friend to validate what you are doing and your progress. You can find some of that here on this blog - but try and find a person around you, or make a new friend, who will support and encourage what you are doing. all the best, Tony
Guest guest
Tony, I am a friendly lurker. I've never posted with this group but just adore reading everyone else's posts. Everyone's so dear and friendly and I've learned bunches. In particular, your summary of your trek from unhealthy to healthy eater really resonated with me because I'm looking at giving up a lot (most) of the things you mentioned giving up and the way you did it makes so much sense to me. I absolutely relate to the part of your story where you pigged out the first Saturday and felt so awful. Exactly what I would have done! Thank you so much for giving me the inspiration to continue and for outlining such a sensible method! Guest guest
I'm new here too, this is a great group! Everyone is so friendly and helpful! I'm in the process of changing my eating habits, and I know how hard it can be for sure. One of things that led me to the change was the Ultra Simple Diet by Dr Mark Hyman - it's a 7 day (initially) detox diet that leads you eventually into identifying what foods you're sensitive to (wheat, dairy, eggs, corn etc) and might be causing inflammation and other problems (sinus congestion, joint pain, constipation etc). He includes some meat (chicken) but also says it can be meatless, using beans etc. I mention this as it might be a way for you to start the transition, having been there myself. I've always had a hard time changing my eating habits, always felt hungry and " deprived " but on his diet I had NO cravings and felt satisfied. Unfortunately the holidays came and I got out of the good habits I had started to form with it, but I'm ready to get back to it. Like I said, I found it to be a good way to transition from eating " not good for me things " into (eventually - I'm still making changes) becoming vegan (I'm still not totally familar with all the different types but I'll get there!). You might want to check it out, it's the easiest thing to follow (and I've tried them all!). It's not just about weight loss, it's also about health. Maybe your library has the book (it's a small novel size paperback) if you want to check it out. Jann
