Guest guest
Hi all, I joined about a week ago and find your site very educational. Both my daughter and I go 'off' meat when we aren't feeling well. Once we both did it at the same time while in different countries and hadn't spoken to each other! I can actually live without meat, but how to you substitute the satisfaction ? I know it bogs you down for days! Kinda like quitting smoking? I will keep my freezer of meat until I prove I can do this as I know it is the right thing and then donate to the food bank. Vegetarian pet food? Do they really like it? Wow so much to learn. Thanks in advance while I start my journey.
Guest guest
Welcome! I am glad you are trying to be a vegetarian. And I believe you can do it. I just became a vegetarian last April, so I am still " new " to all of this too. It gets easier as time goes on. A good way to satisfy your cravings for meat is to try some soy based meat products (like BOCA or Morning Star Farms). Look in the freezer section at your grocery store. My wal-mart has a section that is devoted to boca, morning star and other meatless products. My fiance is not a vegetarian, but we cook with the BOCA ground " beef " for things like spaghetti, chili, even hamburger helper. And he actually likes it! As for my dogs, I feed them dry dog food. I know it still has meat in it, but I feel like they really need the extra protein. Guest guest
Welcome! I'm fairly new too. I stopped eating meat about 8 weeks ago. I did it for ethical reasons, but there were a few times when I started to question my reasons. Then, I watched " Earthlings " on youtube and it made all the difference. I'll never go back. If you want to do it, yes, you might be uncomfortable at first. My first week was fine, except for some gas. My second week was worse with feeling fatiqued and not being able to figure out what to eat. Then, in about my third week, I'd wake up at night hungry. That night hunger helped me to start eating breakfast which has made a huge difference. I'll eat fruit or oatmeal and then the rest of the day is easier for me. I have come to actually enjoy the feeling of being hungry...as long as I know that I've got tasty food coming that I'm going to enjoy. So, keeping leftovers in the freezer has helped me with that. After the 3rd week, I started to feel normal again. I also started paying attention to vitamins by adding ground sea veg's and nutritional yeast to my foods. Also, I take a vegan iron supplement every morning. Another thing that helps is to take a Vegan Organic Food Bar with me at all times. It tastes pretty good and fills me up for at least 2 hours. I've also kept eggs in our diet since we have 9 chickens in our backyard and raw cheese, so I probably could be fine without any supplementation. I'm starting to replace grated cheese with nutritional yeast, like in my soups, on pasta or on potatos. It's a process, so keep learning and applying what you know. Guest guest
Personally, I think dogs are supposed to eat meat. And I know cats pretty much have to. I feed mine regular food. However, if money and time were not factors, I would feed them as natural a diet as possible for them, which would be mainly raw meat. I, however, don't need to eat meat so I choose not to.
