Guest guest
Hi. My name is Gretchen. About a week ago my daughter saw a animal slaughter house video and decided to become a vegetarian. I dont know very much about what to feed her, so that she gets all the vitamins she needs to stay healty. I dont know any reciepes to make for her. I gave her salad one night and then vegetable soup the next. She is overweight and was recently told by her doctor to lose about 20 pounds. So i dont want to feed her alot of pasta. I want to also become a vegetarian now. I put a question on Answers for help with this and I was directed to this group. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Guest guest
Welcome, There are lots of really good recipes in the files section. There are even some that are specifically for kids. (LOL those are the ones my husband likes best.) How old is your daughter? You should plan on serving lots of green vegetables, Broccoli particularly for protein. Throw out the white bread and make whole wheat bread; It isn't hard and it is sooo much better for you. She needs the whole grain, not just the starch that is in the white flour. Legumes are also very good for the body. If she won't eat kidney beans and such, give her lentils and split peas. Brown rice is also a winner on the calorie vs nutrition scale. White rice doesn't score so well, but it is OK some times. Get yourself a vegetarian cook book, too. Most have a section on nutrition and meal planning. The pictures will inspire you, where just reading a recipe won't. Eating vegetarian isn't a weight loss diet, but it is easier to eat healthy on a vegetarian diet. Pealing vegetables doesn't count as exercise. Again, Welcome to the group. Katie kodygarfield <kodygarfield wrote: Hi. My name is Gretchen. Guest guest
Hi there! I have a 14 yo daughter who went vegetarian last summer. She loves simple veggie soup, (I make in my crockpot), salad and veggie sandwiches. She is not big on peanut butter sandwiches, but will eat those Uncrustables. Will your daughter eat eggs? Does she still drink milk? If so, that will make things a little easier. Our doc suggested using the vegetarian food pyramid. I made a checklist that we fill out at dinner each night to make sure that she is getting what she needs. (Protein and carbs are a must for her because she is an athlete.) For us, experimenting with 1 new item a week helped us to discover that she likes tabouli, and even broccoli. Also, experimenting with different methods of cooking made a big difference. For example, she loves steamed broccoli but not boiled, or microwaved. Good luck and have fun trying new stuff! Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Search. Guest guest
You are so very welcome. I should have mentioned earlier that her salads should be made with romaine and leaf lettuce and spinach, not iceberg lettuce. Iceberg has almost no nutrient in it and has a lot of sodium which is not good. Try chopping some raw cauliflower and or raw zucchini into her salads and dress them up with pine nuts and or sesame seeds. Don't over do it on the fruits, yes, they are vegetarian, but they have a lot of sugar in them, particularly bananas. Guest guest
I am also a member of vegparents (or some name like that) on . There are tons of ways to use your everyday meat recipes in a non-meatless way. My biggest challenge was not being afraid that it wouldn't turn out or wouldn't taste good. Open minds=full and healthy tummies I think there is a recipe index on the group board, as well. Best of luck, and congratulations on the lifestyle change. Guest guest
A checklist is a really great idea. I am thinking about doing one for myself and for my daughter. She is 21 months and can be finicky at times (who isn't? LOL) And, getting the child involved helps them to take on the responsibility Rachel Martin <ozracheltn wrote: Hi there! Guest guest
I totally agree. I didn't get into it for weight loss, but it is an added bonus. Feeling good (from not eating meat) gets me motivated to exercise. I used to get such a distended stomach after eating, and now, I don't even know I just ate, yet there is no hunger feeling. As for the fruit with all the sugar, I just read a book that recommended you eat fruit first thing on an empty stomach, and then wait 30 minutes before eating anything else. I was doing a small packet of oatmeal each morning, but am starting with fruit, 30 min., fruit, 30 min., then I get too busy and forget to eat the oatmeal Best wishes, Cassie indy_bunny <indy_bunny wrote: --- In , " kodygarfield " <kodygarfield wrote: > Hello, my names Heather, I've been a vegetarian for almost a year now, i gotta say i love this group and the recipes there are so many that I've been trying lately I've really gotten back into cooking its great. Guest guest
If you cut out meat, 20 LBS will be easy! Just limit the pasta, do lots of good veggies, etc. You can make veggie stew, chili, etc. I will get some recipes here for everyone. You all have been WONDERFUL! :*) CAT
