It's common unless you create a scene. I ask for the manager and talk loud and

you better believe they don't like that, the price always comes down for me.

Carl's Jr makes me a bun with lettuce, pickle, tomato, onion, mayo and a slice

of cheese if I want the cheese and the price is a quarter.

Discrimination

Hello just joined and I have a question and observation. Last week I

was at an upscale restaurant in Niagara Falls and ordered " special

mac and cheese with chicken. " I ordered it without the chicken and

when the bill came the price was still $14.95 for a bowl of fancy

mac and cheese. I was annoyed that I paid $14.95 for a $4 meal.

On the way back to Cleveland I stopped at McDonald's because I was

starving and ordered a " chicken wrap, hold the chicken. " The woman

behind the counter said " it's just going to be a wrap with cheese

and lettuce. " I said fine, I'll take it. She then said she was going

to have to charge me $1.50 for it anyway.

So I told her fine, " give me the chicken on the side to go. " I

figured if they were going to charge me for it, I was taking it. I

eventually gave it to my dog.

I want to know if this is common for other people who order

food " hold the meat. " I think it's a big racket. If restaurants

charge us extra for sides, they could at least reduce the cost when

you are eliminating the most expensive items for the meal.

I'm a reporter and planning to write a Revolt of the Vegetarian

column suggesting that if we are being charged, we need to start

asking for the meat to go.

Could be but if it is fast food it is done in front of me and if it is a

restaurant I get them when the check comes so I have no fear.

Ask the waiter, then go to the manager. If nothing is done and it is a

chain establishment, go to the website and complain. If it is small

establishment, don't hesitate to ask for the owner or find out how to

contact the owner. We normally prevail, or no longer patronize them.

We went to a chain and like a million times before, I asked for a

substitution on my platter. At all other locations, I was never charged

extra. This time, they charged $4! We went to the manager, who said this

was policy. I got on the website and complained. They sent us $20 in gift

certificates for future meals.

I actually run into this all the time. I took 3 business trips in February, one

for 4 days. The women I was with and I had dinner at a seafood restaurant. I

ordered an $11.00 chicken pear salad minus the chicken. I still paid $11.00 for

it. One lady that was with us was curious about the same thing. Why restaurants

charge more for sides but would not discount for no meat and she is not even

vegetarian.

My husband will actually make a comment when he is paying the bill about

paying the same for two dishes (we usually order the same, just one w/ no meat)

when one dish had less quantity than the other. His opinion is if I hold the

meat I should get more vegetable in its place.

Maybe someday the restaurant world will get it, for now we try to only go to

restaurants that offer some type of vegetarian dish. The problem being that last

week I had veggie bugers from 2 different restaurants in 2 different cities and

they were both terrible but that was the only vegetarian dish offered and I was

too tired to get the waitresses to get my order right.

This happens to me a lot too. I went to Red Lobster a few months ago

and ordered the crab fettuccini but without the crab. The dish cost

around $12 I think. I still had to pay full price. I don't think

noodles with some alfredo sauce is worth that much. Also, it seemed

like the portion of pasta was lighter too. If I have to pay the same

price as the dish with crab, I think I should get more of the cheap

stuff!!

Also, I will occasionally eat breakfast at places like McDonalds. I

always have to pay full price even though I order the breakfast

sandwiches without meat.

I went to Burger King one morning and I think they actually did give me

a discount for ordering it without the meat.

I would also be interested to read your story!

WOW it usually costs at least $0.30 to add a slice of cheese. I don't know what

Carl's Jr is.

Good luck with your column!!!! I have been a vegetarian all my life and

have had some interesting experiences at restaurants ordering FOOD...LOL.

One time I just couldn't make the waitress understand I didn't care to order

anything that was meat. I finally ordered a hard boiled egg (in the shell)

and crackers (in the wrapper). Once at Burger King I ordered a whooper with

everything but hold the meat. I got buns with meat patties and a another

box that had the lettuce, tomatoes and everything.

I am curious, Stephanie.....did you ask the server if it was a

" made to order " dish or if they just assembled it in the kitchen

from already prepared components? And, sometimes a dish

like this is prepared ahead of time, if it is served in a specific

serving dish and reheated right before serving. I can tell

you from my experience as a headchef and kitchen manager,

years ago, that preparing ahead of time is a great time saver

and is done as often as possible.

I would much rather try to find some

thing on the menu that could easily be altered....order a dish

that was already meatless......or call

ahead of time and see if they have any vegetarian dishes on

the menu.....or see if they have a menu on-line that you can

look at ahead of time so you can be prepared. What most people

don't understand is that when you ask for a dish to be altered, it can take a

bit more

time to make it a way that is different from the norm and probably does not

make

the cooks very happy.

My oldest grandson, who is now 14, for a while was a " bread-atarian " ...

meaning when they went out and got hamburgers, Austin didn't want

the meat or the vegetables or even the cheese.....he wanted ONLY

the bun....but, they still paid full price for it.

I don't know where you live but around here, in deep east Texas,

they don't see many vegetarians but I can usually find something

on the menu to eat.....add to that that I am a Type II diabetic and it

can be a challenge not to overeat on the carbs. We are not strict

vegetarians, but I do enjoy serving vegetarian meals several times

a week and have a pretty nice collection of vegetarian cookbooks and

enjoy vegetarian cooking. I used to to " Vegetarian Times "

magazine and that was a source of lots of good recipes.

But, it can be a challenge to find something really wonderful in a regular

restaurant, which is why I would, most of the time, rather eat at home........

better luck next time. And sorry for the long post.

I got disgusted about the same thing and started just asking for the meat on the

side. My husband still eats meat, so sometimes he would eat it and sometimes I

just throw it away, but it does make me angry. Lately I have been asking for

the meat raw and in a take out bag or box. I put it in the freezer and later

give it to a friend who is on a very limited food budget. If I order something

with eggs, I ask for them raw and in the shell.

Personally, I'd rather ask for EXTRAS of the things I'll actually

eat. I've been ordering veggy sandwiches at Subway since WAY

BEFORE they had it on themenu.. I used to get it for dirt cheap.

then they added it to the menu, and it has a higher price.. I was

okay with that.

as long as they still " make it my way " as they claim... which means a

boatload of veggies =)

still, i prefer to eat out at places that make good vegan food, or

make it at home for myself!!!

That is the reason I try to avoid ordering " no meat " . When I do

though I always ask for a substitution such as " beans for a salad "

or extra veggies or cheese or something. Most rsturants will happily

make substitutions at no extra cost. Or else I will ask for the

meat on the side which my husband will eat, or could give to the dog

at least.
