Guest guest
yesterday consisted of the barley wine fest i'm pretty sure we had a mock chicken sandwich from love and haight..but to be truthful, its all rather fuzzy! jo Feb 17, 2008 10:08 AM Eating Out We did eat out on Valentine's Day :-) I had felafel and hummous, one of my favourite starters, followed by potato, cashew and spinach curry with rice and salad, and apple, banana, pear and date crumble with ice cream. However ... yesterday we had a delicious Indian meal cooked by Katy who is an excellent cook. It was potato, onion and ginger bhajis with lemon rice and naan bread, with two other dishes. One contained cauliflower, and one sweet potato. It was a lovely meal, and I believe the recipes were from the Linda Madjzlik. Today we went to Wisley Garden as the weather was really beautiful and there were lots of flowers out already. We had lunch there. I had pea soup and bread, but they did not have a vegan fat, just butter or Flora. Jo Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance. Guest guest
I have found it very interesting reading the different experiences of everyone in reference to eating out meat free. There are seven of us in our family and when we eat out we frequent places that are family owned and operated- especially when we travel. I find that they are much more accomodating and value you as a customer more than the big chain places. I was on travel and stopped at a " Mom and Pop " restaurant outside of DC recently and asked if I could substitute the meat on a sandwich for something. When asked what I wanted to use as a substitute, I mentioned a portabello mushroom would be good (joking of course, I was setting them up to get a lower price). The manager actually went to the store and purchased one for my sandwich. It wasn't " fast " food but it was good. We also are " discriminating " and only frequent chains that honor us as consumers like Panera Bread, Port City Java (which offers vegorganic food and beverages)and Chipotles. I make a point to tell the managers that we choose them over other places because they are vegetarian friendly. I will even write letters to district managers to tell them that. Because our family is so large we normally spend close to $100 each time we eat out. I include a copy of the receipt in any correspondence so that they realize that vegetarians are a viable part of their market. Even if you don't spend that much keep those receipts and use them when contacting companies. It is proof that we are willing to do business with them which will prompt them to change. When we suffer in silence, people believe that we are not there. While it is good to post concerns to a group of like-minded people we also need to let the people who make the decisions know (district managers, regional managers and other executives) that they need to address the way they treat their consumers. If enough of us speak up, change will come- many times with an apology and coupons!
Guest guest
I understand what you mean. I am not a strict vegetarian, more like a " near vegetarian " , but I am gluten-intolerant and allergic to MSG. I NEVER eat at chain restaurants anymore (most generally use at least some pre-prepared stuff and therefore even the cook can't guarantee what's not in there) unless I feel like playing Russian roulette. They had to carry me out of Appleby's after a salad (I asked for no salad dressing & explained my allergy) and had to be carried out of the place. I do love Mom & Pop places. In addition the fact that they can (and usually quite willingly) " whip something up " for me, I am supporting a truly local business. Southern Cookin' As a native of Arkansas and former resident of Georgia from a died-in-the-wool Southern family clear back to 1748, I hate tah tell ya, but dat was fat-back in dem greens, not ham. Also, many southern cities have vegetarian restaurants or at least vegetarian-friendly restaurants. These are privately-owned and usually small. Way back when, in downtown Little Rock, there was a tiny place called " International Bazaar " that was out of this world! She was Brazilian and he was Indian, something like that. They were only open for lunch and always had a line to get in clear around the block. Melanie in Greece
Guest guest
That is what I love about this loop - all the vegetarian Southerners. I grew up in Jackson, Mississippi. Although I do love Chicago - I miss the South and Southern cooking! <vegetarian of course> --- On Thu, 7/30/09, Melanie Morphyades <tranquility_farm wrote: Melanie Morphyades <tranquility_farm Re: eating out Thursday, July 30, 2009, 3:33 PM I understand what you mean. Guest guest
I thought that being a vegetarian was difficult and then one of the gifts I acquired along with lyme disease was a gluten allergy. I eat out quite a bit and I am so sick of salads without dressing because most commercial salad dressings contain gluten. I avoid chain restaurants. The staff rarely have a clue what is in the food. There are never any postings of ingredients like I find in grocery stores. Kathleen I understand what you mean.
