It is one of the world's most expensive fruits if not the most expensive. It has wickedly sharp bits on the outside and these are over a inch long, in fact they are banned on public transport in may countries they are a lethal weapon, and that is before you open them. However when you open them the smell dissipates fairly quickly they are wonderful to eat, but horrible to prepare. They taste between a pineapple a banana and a passion fruit. Its texture inside is like a soupy custard a bit like custard apple. It is eaten in different stages of development rather like a stilton, I like my durian fruit mature others prefer it less ripe. Guest guest
You know. We went to the local Asian market. It was huge... Looked clean, good lighting ect. But their was a stench that smelled exactly what you described. And on the counter was a HUGE box of those things. Nice to know it was probably the fruit not the store itself. We almost weren't going to go back even though they are the only shop that sells vegetarian pork chops and prawns. Guest guest
Attach a chain to it, LOL!!!! They really do look like some spiked medieval weaponry that you'd swing from a chain. My late Husband loved durian and liked to buy them fresh, I only tolerate the stuff. Bad drains, OMG, yes! (That's so on the money, and such a POLITE description, LOL!) The stuff is a delicious soft wet custardy fruit but there's always the underlying smell/taste to deal with, which can be less pronounced depending on the preparation. Asian stores and supermarkets sell an astonishing number of durian based goods. These are much more economical and understandable than buying a whole fruit, which is not just pricey, but can be complex/confusing to open and inconvenient to store. Closed containers or a bunch of baking soda in the fridge is pretty much mandatory. I used to read an online food group which had a real life potluck once, and one of the guys who attended reminded people of who he was (for years) by saying: I'm the guy who brought the durian! He apparently wasn't all that memorable, but it was. As someone who has a love/hate relationship with the stuff, I think that the soft candies, ice cream and ice pops are the most palatable, your tastes may vary. The intensity of canned durian varies by brand, but all seem to benefit from being partially frozen in the can before eating. A can of the fruit or a pint of ice cream won't necessarily be cheap, but it's a lot less money than wasting a whole durian if you can't handle the smell or taste. I'm extremely fond of a Chinese dish called cho tofu, which is deep fried pillows of fermented tofu served with a fresh cabbage slaw, the kind of thing that makes everyone in the restaurant sniff the air then look around to see who did what or if food can really smell like that. Durian trumps it, but has it's own rewards for the adventurous eater. This really isn't meant to put anyone off to trying something new, it's one of the world's great fruits, but often an acquired taste. If you try it, kudos, and enjoy! Guest guest
Yanno..... We have a few stores here in the Philly area called H Mart. It's an asian grocery store. I saw this durian fruit there and had no idea what it was and what to do with it...... AND I was totally perplexed as to why it was in the freezer along side the meats. Now I know why! Thanks for enlightening me, Catherine One thing I wonder is if I get one, isn't it going to stink up my apartment while it's thawing out before I can use it, even if I thaw it out in the fridge? I doubt you can do anything with it til it's softer because it'd be a pain to cut into it beforehand, right? Guest guest
Durian smells minimally until it's opened. Opening it is an adventure in itself, but the smell isn't all that bad. Maybe I'm just used to it, lol. I'd seriously suggest trying a can of the fruit or the ice pops first to see if you even like it. A whole durian is an investment, and you may not be able to give it away if it's not to your tastes. Durian dissection looks a bit like brain surgery, you'll see what I mean if you opt for the whole fruit. I never cut into it personally and can't attest to how hard the shell is, but my late Husband used a big sharp knife and seemed to be hacking at it a bit. After the first time he always carved it in a big baking pan to catch the juices, kind of like a weird spiny turkey lol. The fruit is in convoluted chambers inside the shell (which resemble a brain or sinus cavities), and it clings a bit and has to be coaxed out gently with a spoon. The less said about the appearance the better, but if you do like it, the aroma and appearance won't matter at all. It's deliciously addictive, and one of the most beloved fruits in the world. I personally can't get past the smell for very long, but will savor a few scoops of it on occasion. Please let us know what you think if you do try it, and enjoy!
