Guest guest
HI Carol! Welcome to the group! I'm Whitney and I " ve been a vegetarian since October. Nice to meet you Whit carolobrocki <carolobrocki wrote: Dear Pat and Cindi, I am a newbie to the group, and to vegetarianism. I stopped eating red meat. I have to ease into things slowly. That was how I was able to stop smoking 7 1/2 years ago, by easing myself out of it. I also need to lose some weight. I also buy mostly organic food, and usually only buy non- organic if I absolutely don't have a choice at the grocery store. I was wondering if you have any recommendations for your favorite books for new vegetarians? My name is Carol, and I live in Annapolis, Maryland. Guest guest
Welcome to the group, Carol! And congratulations on your decision to become vegetarian - as I invariably say, it's a decision you won't regret! There are SO many wonderful advantages to it - but you know that We understand that not everyone can just change to vegetarianism overnight - that requires a lot of motivation plus willpower plus the right circumstances in one's life for doing it. But getting on the path is important, so keep working at it. We'll help as much as we can, so feel free to ask if you need ideas! (Oh, while I'm at it - good for you for having given up the smoking! One less 'bad' thing to affect your health, eh? LOL This, I am sure, will be much easier.) > I also need to lose some weight. I decided that this is a very > healthy way to accomplish that. Well yes - but this group wouldn't exist if being vegetarian were in itself enough to keep people slim! I have been veggie for a long time, but I have gained weight in the past and had to slim down - and others here have also found that. Junk food and badly balanced meals put weight on for us too! > I was wondering if you have any recommendations for your favorite > books for new vegetarians? Book for new vegetarians? Well, I haven't kept up with that myself, but I did find a couple of them in the last year or so (or was it longer back?): _Being Vegetarian For Dummies_ and _The Idiot's Guide to Vegan Living_ are both useful primers - including how to do it gradually, since that is what you are planning to do. Good tips. For cookbooks, I especially like Barnard and Kramer, _ How It All Vegan_ and _The Garden of Vegan_ and Kramer's _La Dolce Vegan_. They're fun recipes and easy and, as far as my experience with them has been, foolproof But there are lots of others and other members will probably recommend their own favourites (I hope). Meanwhile, have a look at our recipes in the Files (link on the homepage) for both vegan and ovo-lacto recipes. They're all 'tried and true' by the member who posted them, so you know you're getting good ones! And of course they're all (except in the folder marked otherwise) low in fat and in calories - suitable for slimming. Enjoy the group and write in often, okay? Thanks for saying Hi! I am Pat, btw, living in Canada with my dh and our three furkids. I first went veggie around 25 years ago and am now vegan. I am 66. It's called Vegan Done Light and can be found here: http://www.zenpawn.com/vegblog/store.html or from the Links section in the Products folder. Guest guest
Hi Pat, Thanks for your kind welcome. I am sure there are those who can just become vegetarian all at once. But you're right, I am on the path and doing great. There is a new farmer's market which opened this week and I went there with my parents and bought fresh produce, and a little catnip filled-sock for my furbaby! She loved it!! I understand what you're saying about the losing weight part of it. I never eat a lot of fruit and veggies, so now I am trying to eat more of those every day. I don't really eat a lot of junk food, I stay away from the fast food places. Sometimes we order pizza or order chinese food but only about once a week. I do admit though I have a passion for candy. I also gave up drinking Coke!! That was always my favorite " junk " drink - and I love it. But as soon as I stop drinking it, I start losing a little weight. I definitely eat/drink too much sugar and need to watch that. I am also really careful about not eating foods that contain " partially hydrogenated oil " . It is in so many things. I can't wait to check out the recipe files!! I will be printing out a lot, I'm sure. I love recipes that are tried and true. Thank you too for the suggestion of the books. I'll go to Amazon and check them out. I am still proud of myself that I quit smoking. I really enjoyed smoking, but now I can't figure out what I thought was so great about it. And, I was surprised that it wasn't that hard for me to quit. I just ordered a couple of belly dance DVDS to use here at home. I used to take classes off and on for about a year and I LOVED it. Congrats on being a vegetarian and now vegan! And for so many years now! That is awesome - what made you decide to become a vegetarian? I am 53 - the new 43!! LOL I love it here already! Guest guest
Hi Carol ~ Sorry for my late welcome, but Welcome! :-) Congrats on not smoking any longer. It's been 5.5 years for me. I've been vegetarian for almost 3 years now. As far as books go, if you're able to get in season produce, I would recommended Deborah Madison's Local Flavors. I reference that during the year when we start to get " new " produce by the seasons. Note that not all recipes will be low cal/fat or slimming! She has other books that we use often too. Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker by and the Vegetarian 5 Ingredient Gourmet are also both used frequently here. The 5 Ingredient Gourmet is great for quick fix ideas. We actually used a couple recipes when we went camping last. Minimal ingredients and could cook it all on a small Coleman propane stove. Those are only a few of my books that come to mind, we have a bunch here! :-) Cindi, co-owner of group with Pat carolobrocki <carolobrocki wrote: Dear Pat and Cindi, I am a newbie to the group, and to vegetarianism. Guest guest
Thanks for letting me join the group. I am a happily married, 65 year old grandmother. We travel in a motor home but when " in town " park on our 10 acres here in N. Texas. We decided to eat more healthy foods and just discovered TVP and soy milk. Now we are " hungry " to learn more. We use very little of potatoes, white flour, sugar or white rice so as to ward off any blood sugar problems in the future. This mostly retired nurse is anxious to learn!
