Guest guest
Welcome into the group. Go to the homepage and in the file area you should see a folder set up for newbies, it has links and all types of information for you. It even goes over the protein issue. Our recipes file link is in there too Donna Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile " wiccanbewitched " <wiccanbewitched Wed, 12 Mar 2008 16:20:19 new to group Hi, I just came across this group last night while doing a search. For health and a few other reasons I would like to make the transition to a vegetarian lifestyle. I was wondering if you had any suggestions for a " newbie " ; good cookbooks, best way to make the transition, etc? My friends are all telling me that I will get way to many carbs and not enough protein so I would like to be able to respond to them in an educated manner. Thanks in advance for your advice. Guest guest
that's all I ever hear also....what about protein? I found out that we've been fed a line of bunk for years and that protein is in ALL vegetables...spinach being at the top! I always ask those skeptics... " how does a cow gain all that weight and have huge muscle mass? They eat GRASS.....hmmmm " Why should we get our protein second hand? Let's just go to the source...same with fish...eat the plants that the fish eat! Carbs? I am finding that living a vegetarian lifestyle means that I am eating lots or fruits and vegetables and I don't go for grains as my first food Kathleen VA - <thelilacflower " Vegetarian Group " Wednesday, March 12, 2008 8:12 AM Re: wicca new to group > Welcome into the group. Guest guest
The best way for a vegetarian to get enough protein is to eat a well balanced diet made up of a wide variety of plant based foods.. Most people who eat meat eat much more protein than their bodies actually need and it is not hard to get enough complete protein eating a plant based diet. You will learn....it just takes time. This is a good website so you can read up on the subject:: http://www.theveggietable.com/articles/protein.html And here is a second one that explains complete and incomplete proteins. If you don't use dairy products, this is an interesting nutrition fact: How much broccoli or turnip greens would I have to eat to meet the equivalent calcium intake of two servings of dairy products? You would have to eat 2.5 cups of broccoli or 1 cup of turnip greens. I am just as glad not to be a cow eating grass because I like having a stomach with one compartment instead of the 4 compartments a cow's stomach has in order to digest that hard-to-digest raw grass.....AND, I don't think I would enjoy chewing on the cud 8 to 9 hours a day!
