Guest guest
Here is a list of cheese makers who use a Vegetable rennet instead of the one from a cows stomach.: This list is vegetarian Crystal Farms · Cub brand · Horizon Organic · Kraft (except sharp and extra sharp Cheddar) · Market Pantry (Target) · Organic Valley · Safeway brand (white colored) · Sargento Being lacto or lacto-ovo vegetarian can make getting enough protein, especially into growing children, an easier thing to do and if you love milk cheese and eggs there is no reason to give them up. It certainly makes planning meals easier. I can live without meat...and as a diabetic, I already have to give up SO many foods that most vegetarians can eat with no problems, and that I love....white potatoes, white rice, most crackers, high carb fruits....oh, the list is endless....but, I don't ask me to give up one of my favorite desserts....baked custard and one of my favorite comfort foods, and I still have to watch it, whole wheat macaroni and cheese. Choices are what life is about....variations of being vegan are also good choices for some of us. Have a blessed Sunday! Nancy C. Guest guest
Ilchester makes excellent cheese and the majority of it if suitable for vegetarians. http://www.ilchester.co.uk/ This is a product description for a mature cheddar from Ilchester: http://www.ilchester.co.uk/product_pdfs/Profile_cheddarslices.pdf Five Counties cheese description: http://www.ilchester.co.uk/product_pdfs/Profile_fivecounties.pdf Always best to check the website for the cheese that interests you to determine whether or not it is vegetarian suitable. Guest guest
Thank you for this list. I have been really concerned about this ever since I heard about rennet. I eat a lot of kraft cheese and even emailed Kraft. This is the answer I got: " I understand that knowing what ingredients are in the food products you eat directly affect how you practice your religion/dietary lifestyle, and Kraft Foods does all that it can to assist its consumers in making educated food decisions. I apologize but unfortunately this ingredient information is not currently available. As you can imagine our products change frequently, and maintaining a list of products for specific dietary practices would be virtually impossible. If you haven't done so already, please add our site to your favorites and visit us again soon! " That completely did NOT answer my question or help me at all. So I have had no idea if I could eat Kraft cheese or not. And that answer seems rediculous...surely they know what ingredients they put into their foods. Anyway, thank you again for your list!! , " nancihank " <nancihank wrote: > > Here is a list of cheese makers who use a Vegetable rennet instead of the one from a cows stomach.: > This list is vegetarian > Crystal Farms > · Cub brand > · Horizon Organic > · Kraft (except sharp and extra sharp Cheddar) > · Market Pantry (Target) > · Organic Valley > · Safeway brand (white colored) > · Sargento > > Being lacto or lacto-ovo vegetarian can make getting enough protein, > especially into growing children, an easier thing to do and if you love milk > cheese and eggs there is no reason to give them up. Guest guest
I have a feeling they use animal rennet in some cheeses and vegetable rennet in others........or maybe they just don't think it is important because MAYBE the person who is in charge of that is not vegeterian and doesn't realize how important that information is to other people who are. Maybe we should ALL email them and see if we get the same canned response. It might make them think twice about getting an accurate list together. Nancy C. Guest guest
Don't forget my favorite cheese, Tillamook. It states on the label that it is made with vegetable rennet. It is owned by a cooperative of dairy farmers in Oregon. The cheese is found all over the US in places like Sam's Club and Costco as well as some groceries. If you are fortunate enough to live in the northwest you can find it in all the grocery stores in great variety.
