Guest guest
My name is Lena and I just joined yesterday. I have been enjoying the chatter amongst members and learning along the way. Thanks to Jenn for telling me about this group. My question is if anyone has a good recipe for a grilling sauce or mix for veggies? I apologize because I haven't checked the files yet. I really would like to cook some asparagus as I have only had it in a can but I love it. Lena
Guest guest
Canned asperagus is a faint shadow of what the fresh stuff is. I would eat it every day if I could grow it. I love it. I usually just break off the tough ends, rince it under running water and steam it in the vegetable steamer for 8-10 minutes with a little salt. Unfortunately, my husband loves it, too, so I do have to share. Katie Lena Clark <iroc.camaro86 wrote: My name is Lena and I just joined yesterday. Guest guest
I am going to have to try it this way. I was afraid that it would take a long time to cook and that it would be tough. Have you ever grilled it? Lena On Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 3:47 PM, Katie <cozycate wrote: > Canned asperagus is a faint shadow of what the fresh stuff is. I would > eat it every day if I could grow it. Guest guest
I love it brushed lightly with olive, then grilled. I DO grow it. There is a big difference from the fresh you buy–much more tender. I pick it and eat it just like that. It's better than candy ¸.·´ .·´¨¨)) ((¸¸.·´ .·´ -:¦:- Terri -:¦:- ((¸¸.·´ On Mar 17, 2008, at 7:57 PM, Lena Clark wrote: > I am going to have to try it this way. Guest guest
Yes, but I perfer it steamed. It makes a wonderful addition to stir-fry, too. The biggest thing to be concerned about with fresh asparagus is snapping off the tough bottoms of the stalks. After you see it done, it is the simplest thing in the world, but it is hard to explain how. I suggest that you ask the produce manager is your grocery store to show you how. People hate to throw away the tough ends, but they can't be eaten as they are. Most people just toss them, but Ispend half an hour pealling them and put them in salads. You are in for a treat, I guarentee you will never want to settle for canned asparagus again. Katie Lena Clark <iroc.camaro86 wrote: I am going to have to try it this way. Guest guest
Katie, I second that! I absolutely love asperagus!! I have been known to use the can in salads, but NOTHING (my opinion) compares to the fresh. I also just steam them and add a little salt. I feel they are too good to cover up with a sauce. I have had a lemon type sauce on them before and they are ok, but I love the jeannie Katie <cozycate wrote: Canned asperagus is a faint shadow of what the fresh stuff is. Guest guest
We just break off the tough woody ends and then cut them and stir fry them yum. No need to seam or boil them. Guest guest
I find it super easy to do. If you hold the asparagus one end with each hand and just bend until it snaps. I am told it snaps off at the dry part. I do this all the time now and it is literally a " snap " to do a bunch in no time. LOL the bottoms make their way into my vegetable stock which I freeze so I always have easy access to broth which makes it's way into lots of soups and stews.
