Guest guest
Hi Sandy, Welcome to the group. Sorry to hear that the attitude to vegetarians is still fairly unenlightened in the Western Isles. I worked on the Isle of Skye in the mid 70s and vegetarianism was considered pretty way out at that time. I went up to Ullapool a year or so ago and was pleasantly surprised to dicover that vegetarians were being catered for in the Highlands these days - I guess it just hasn't made it across the Minch yet! You will find loads of excellent recipes here, from all over the world. If you have any questions, just ask - people are very friendly and helpful! I also live on my own so I tend to cook enough for 4 meals and freeze three portions, rather than eating the same thing for too many days in a row. I've been a vegetarian for more than 12 years but I'm not much of a cook, mostly because I live on my own and prefer to have some one to cook for. I'd love to find recipes with quantities for one person as I really don't like wasting food and always end up cooking far too much. I don't know many vegetarians and it would be nice just to chat with someone and not have to hear how good the bit of animal they had to eat last night was! I live in the Western Isles of Scotland and and the attitude here to vegetarians is still very ignorant as a whole. I've found it changing for the better over the past five years but there's still plenty that can be done. Although I do eat quite healthily there's still a lot I can do to improve my diet and I'm really looking for some variety and worldwide recipes. > > Sandy. > >

Guest guest
Hi, thanks for the reply, Christie. Also sorry for the blank return, I have a trigger happy mouse at the moment. Things aren't too bad here just limited. Most of the restaurants give an option of macaroni cheese or stir fried veg but this really angers me. Meat eaters don't go out to dinner and expect to get mince and potatoes or something else they eat everyday. There is a serious lack of imagination. One place serves a carvery and buffet and the veggy option was cauliflower cheese at £14 a head! The Crown Hotel is great though, their goats cheese and caramelised onion tart on a bed of fresh salad is gorgeous! It's definitely getting better but I'm still walking out of restaurants when I'm offered the same thing I eat at home most days. We don't get many fresh veggy foods here. Tofu only comes in one form and although we can get dried soya it costs a fortune so I end up living off Quorn. But things will change next month when Tesco opens here. My freezer's too small to keep the extras in. I used to freeze lots of meals but it's not an option just now, it was bought as a house warming pressie so can't really change it yet.
