Guest guest
This might sound strange but has anyone experimented or heard of other ways to make produce last longer?? I started thinking about this when I read the message from someone in Florida mentioning problems with humidity. For humidity problems would there be a way to put produce in a clay container since this is what the Green Bags are permeated with. Also, what about what we are washing our produce with. Is there something that would extend shelf life such as baking soda or lemon juice washes? What are your thoughts and ideas on this?
Guest guest
I wrap my lettuce and Napa cabbage in some paper towels to absorb the moisture and then place them in the produce drawer in the refrigerator. I don't wash them until I am ready to make a salad. Gayle **************Planning your summer road trip? Check out AOL Travel Guides. Guest guest
Dear Sandy, here are the steps I take: 1- I let most of the water rinse off then wrap them in layers of paper towel then put them in plastic bag, the paper towel absorbs any excessive moisture which cause veggies to go bad. 2- Do not wash your veggies until you are ready to eat them. 3- The other method I use is a medium size " pot " and bunch up paper towels and leave them at the bottom of the pot, then put veggies on top of the paper towel, then cover the pot and leave them in your frig, this way you won't end up using too much paper towels and you can keep lots of veggies together in the pot and grab the pot when needed. My mom thought me this and it works Ed
Guest guest
I just refrigerate it as soon as we get home. I try to take a large cooler with us when we go to the grocery store, if I have several stops before I can get home with it. Keeping it in the crisper drawers of your refrigerater and not washing the produce until you are ready to use it, will keep it longer too. I try to return all fruit and produce to the refrigerator ASAP after I get what I need. I however, don't refrigerate apples, bananas, potatoes or onions. If you don't put your bananas with other produce they will both last longer. Judy

Guest guest
Just curious.....why would you not want to refrigerate apples? I do all of the rest that you do....but, keep my apples in the hydrator drawer of the fridge. Nancy C. I just refrigerate it as soon as we get home. Guest guest
We eat them up fast and keep them in a wooden bowl on the counter. Cold apples make my teeth hurt. LOL We prefer room temp apples. That's all...... Smile Judy - nancihank Wednesday, April 09, 2008 6:43 PM Re: keeping produce fresh Just curious.....why would you not want to refrigerate apples?
