Guest guest
So after six years of being a vegetarian, I just now came across an article about vitamin b12 while researching for a speech. I began to look through the things I commonly buy to eat, and practically nothing has vitamin B12. I read you can get nutritional yeast, so I went out and spent $17, and after looking closer I realized a serving only gives you 5% of the daily recomended value. The only thing thing I eat that I've seen with vitamin b12 is certain cereal which only has about 25%. Is there anything someone can recomend that doesn't have to be a pill that you let disolve in your mouth? Also, as for the nutritional yeast, does anyone have any good recipes that nutritional yeast can be used?
Guest guest
This site talks about that, and other nutrition questions for vegetarians/vegans: http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/index.htm http://blogs.delphiforums.com/n/blogs/blog.aspx?webtag=cozy_at_home & nav=start
Guest guest
Nutritional yeast is great sprinkled liberally on popcorn. I buy it in the bulk section at the local food co-op. , " Jacie " <my2angels wrote: > > So after six years of being a vegetarian, I just now came across an > article about vitamin b12 while researching for a speech. Guest guest
Aloha, I actually have a great little book " The Nutritional Yeast Cookbook " by Joanne Stepaniak. It is a goldmine of Nutritional Yeast recipes not to mention the whole entire history of Nutritionl Yeast. Really quite interesting. It does say Red Star Yeast (nutritional yeast) provides the 1 microgram per day recommended by WHO in two teaspoons of Nutritional Yeast. In addition to being a reliable, natural source of B12 it is rich in the b-complex vitamins riboflavin, niacin, thiamin and biotin. It is an excellant source of folic acid and provides several minerals including selenium, chromium, zinc, phosphorus and magnesium. PLUS..protein rich in the amino acids lysine and tryptophan and naturally low in fat and sodium, provides dietary fiber and had no added preservatives. How can you not love something like that? We add it to our hummus, mashed and baked potatoes, tofu scrambled eggs, sauces, gravies, salad dressings....and of course...popcorn. Guest guest
I'm posting this on the group instead of just emailing to one, because I think that any newbie here will want this info, as it's very important to one's health to not fall short in B12, if you are vegan, where vegetarians (milk drinkers/egg eaters) don't have to worry so much about it. Jacie, I have only been on the veg*n path a few weeks, and tried different milks and products, and I'm looking at my soymilk: Plain, Silk, Organic is calcium enriched and vitamin fortified. It has 30% calcium, just like dairy milk, plus other vitamins like a, d, folate, magnesium selenium, C, iron, riboflavin, zine and 5O% B12 DAILY NEEDS in a cup. Also, I'm eating pitted dried plums PLUS with more vitamins & antioxidants than reg dried plums, which have 20% B12 needs, along with other things like 20%E. I also love PLUMSWEETS by Sunsweet, which had the benefits of plums AND dark chocolates, but don't have a package to share the info on it right now. But, here's a link to the product, even though it doesn't have the Nut. Info I'd really rather see there: http://www.sunsweet.com/products/info.asp?product=plumsweets I will be getting some more today if you are interested in more detail on that info
