Guest guest
*WARNING* this is NOT a vegetarian post. Donna asked me to tell about my Girl Scouts cooking their meal. This is what they did. If the mere mention of non vegetarian foods bothers you, click on DELETE now. And do not flame me. Beth . . . . . . . . . . . . . I just completed a large health/nutrition/exercise program with my 5th grade Girl Scouts. We discussed fat, fiber, sugars, different choices for protein, vegetables & fruits. As a culmination, the girls each chose a course: protein, vegetable, egg, blender recipe (smoothie), starch, and dessert (there are 6 girls). The smoothie satisfied a requirement to use a small appliance. The GS used mango, strawberries & pineapple juice in her smoothie. The egg recipe satisfied another badge requirement on cooking eggs properly, how their a good source of protein, etc. She did a broccoli cheese omelette. The protein was the GS' favorite chicken breasts marinated in Italian dressing. She made it lower fat by using fat free dressing (another badge requirement). Then the chicken was grilled. The vegetable was microwave steamed green beans tossed with sesame oil & sesame seeds. The GS was funny because she used about 1/4tsp of the oil " because it is very strong. " I said, " yes, but you still need to use enough to lightly coat your beans. " She used about 1tsp in the end. My dd had starch. It evolved from her taking leftover buttered peas w/scallions that she added to macaroni & buried in parmesan, lol. Dessert was interesting....the mom knew nothing about this because the dad had the child but wouldn't bring her over. Mom said she would bring dessert. I said NO, she is to MAKE the dessert. Ok, I'll bring stuff for cupcakes. Ok! They call & let me know that the girl wants to make marinated strawberries. Which struck me as interesting. The mom & 3 dd's are all heavy. The kindergarten twins are WAY heavy. The mom wanted her to make cupcakes but the GS wanted to make strawberries. I wonder what this mom prepares at home & I'll bet the kids would be healthier if different choices were offered. The straberries were marinated in OJ & sprinkled with Sugar in the Raw. She kept going on about how it was HEALTHY sugar because it was all natural & made in Hawaii so you could eat it. Umm...NOOOOOO. Big lecture on various sugars, all 'natural' but still sugar & a refresher on carbs. SIGH. These girls wrote out their recipes including ingredients, how to prep & cook them, what utensils were needed, etc. THEY prepped, THEY cooked & THEY cleaned. ALL of it. I flipped the chicken on the back of the grill. I did hand over hand knife handling. THEY set the table & I served up a plate with a taste of everything. Then THEY cleared the table, loaded the dishwasher & finished the dishes. It all took 3 hours. They finished 4 different badges: Highway to Health, Let's Get Cooking (which springboarded my cooking 'career' when I was in 5th grade!), A Healthier You, & Food Power. They also completed the SNEAKER Patch program (Super Nutrition Education for All Kids to Eat Right). The parents all gave me funny looks & good luck wishes when they dropped their girls off but it was EASY! It was like a symphony. After we did a handwashing experiment, I asked them, " where do we start? " They said with whatever takes the longest & we were off!!! I am really proud of them. Dh had to reassure the parents that I wasn't lying when I told them how well it went. LOL. A great experience! And they all ate everything! Guest guest
Beth, That is awesome you could do that. I wish you could come do our GS group.lol. I know life would be alot easier and healthier for my family now if someone had tried to teach me to cook when I was young. I am just learning at 33 and sometimes my hubby is amazing because even if I cooked when he wasn't around he still eats it. Usually it's not very good. Tell your girls congratulations on their great cooking and earning all those great badges. Jenn Beth Renzetti <elmothree2000 wrote: *WARNING* this is NOT a vegetarian post. Guest guest
Hey Beth, That was a wonderful briefing and keep up the good work. This is the time the girls need all the help they can get. Like jenn, I had to start learing as a adult and I was lost until I found a few good cookbooks, gathered info from this group as well as recipes that turn out. Guest guest
Jenn, Thank you & I will pass along your congratulations. That is awesome you could do that. I wish you could come do our GS group.lol. Where are you, lol?? Keep cooking. As you get more comfortable with it, it gets easier. It's rare that I don't follow a recipe but also rare that I try a recipe & don't like it because I recognize the food combinations as something I like. Just keep trying different recipes. I also rarely repeat a recipe, lol. This group is an amazing wealth of recipes. Have fun!!
