I love Three Bowls- Vegetarian Recipes from an American Zen Buddhist

Monastery. I also just got Easy Dinners Vegetarian by Carrie Holcomb

available only at Barnes and Noble. It is heavy on the pasta recipes

but looks great as far a easy recipes, easy ingredients, good for a

new veggie.

always seem to tweek the recipes a little. I can't eat soy, so I

really appreciate the wide variety of vegetarian dishes she offers

that don't contain tofu and tempeh. Even her " basics " , like the

bechamel sauce and tomato-wine sauce, are markedly better than others

that I've tried. It also offers pairings of herbs, etc. for each

individual vegetable, so you can almost use it as a cooking

encyclopedia. Vegetarian Times magazine has been another good source

for me, though more than their actual cookbook.

Before I was a vegetarian, we went to a book sale and I saw this book Practical

Vegetarian Cookery or Pracitcal Cookery Vegetarian. It didn't have a cover,

but as I looked thru the pages I was so impressed. It gave calories and

protein and fat and basically, everything except fiber content. One day I

noticed that the pages in the index went a little further than I actually had,

so the last little section of pages bound on had come off with the cover. I

loved this so much that I went on ebay and bought another one, just to get those

last few pages. Published by Parragon. It's kind of confusing because of the

way they disply the word VEGETARIAN, sometimes it's between Practical Cookery

and sometimes it's after those 2 words, like on the spine. Could be adapted to

Vegan if one wanted. The cover has a pastry type square with veggies jutting

out from under the top piece of the pastry that is like a lid on top them. I

really think it's the least attractive pic in the whole book, so don't know why

they made it the cover!

Hi,

Have you tried your local library? I checked out several titles to see if I

liked them and then purchased the ones I liked from Amazon.

Very good idea and don't forget to drop by local thrift shops on the

weekend early in the morning. I have picked up many great vegetarian

cookbooks for a dollar or two.

If you have a Half Price Bookstore in your area, go there. I bought home about

10 different veg*n cookbooks from there, and 2 of them were just beans! I'm

still pawing my way thru them in wonder and don't know enough about them to

recommend anything yet.

I'd say 85% of my cookbooks are from library book sales and thrift

shops. I rarely ever buy a new one.

If you are buying your cookbooks used, what would make you think it

was a good one? Wouldn't they keep it, if it was good?

Nope, that is wrong, think hard about it. Many people buy them in hopes of

becoming vegetarian and never used the books because they either tried the

lifestyle and decided it wasn't for them, maybe they were going to try but never

did or did for a short time and never cooked anything but frozen veg. foods.

You have no idea how many wonderful vegetarian cookbooks I have found. I have

passed many of the duplicates to members of the group. In the past year I found

Tassajara bread cookbook, Laurel's bread cookbook and that is a classic,

Vegetarian Times cookbook, 2 different Moosewood cookbooks I sent to members, 2

Mollie Katzen cookbooks, Vegetarian Epicure, and several tofu cookbooks, even

two great Chinese vegetarian cookbooks. I had a woman on Freecycle give me the

Linda MacCartney collection, she bought them in hopes of trying the diet and

then after a few months gave up. The thrift shop is the place to look. if you

go early you have a much

better chance of finding cookbooks before it gets crowded.

I find all good vegetarian cookbooks in the thrift shops, many look

brand new. One of my favorites is a used Passionate Vegetarian

cookbook. It's huge, heavy as the yellow pages. I got that book for

$2.00 and I use it quite a bit.

I too m new and transitioning. First I went to the library and checked out

vegetarian books, side dishes etc. Then I went to a new/used book store and got

a great book that I just love -- 1,001 low-fat vegetarian recipes 2nd edition by

Sue Spitler for $9.99. Since I don't like tofu and most cookbooks have too much

of that, this book is perfect. It does have tofu, but with 1,001 recipes, you

can't beat it. I've probably dog earred more than half to try.

The Vegetarian 5 Ingredient Gourmet by Nava Atlas (already mentioned )

is great, especially if you are transitioning- quick easy recipes.

Also the Vegetarian express Lane cookbook by Sarah Fritschner is good

for quick easy meals.
