Guest guest
I eat onions and garlic daily. My favorite sandwich is crunchy peanut butter with grilled onions. My favorite pizza is no sauce but a heaping pile of onions and garlic. I don't care if I smell, it keeps annoying people away hahahaha. Cooking can destroy some of the " allicin " compound which is responsible for the powerful healing effects of garlic. Onions: Like garlic, onions too, have significant health benefits. For instance, they can: * Boost good-type HDL cholesterol (particularly when consumed raw) * Reduce total cholesterol levels * Increase blood-clot dissolving activity * Reduce the risks of diabetes * Attack bacteria that cause infection * Reduce the risk of certain cancers Scientific tests have further identified a compound in onions called " quercetin " which is a powerful antioxidant and cancer-attacking agent. Peppers: Peppers, along with garlic and onions offer many significant health benefits. Top of the list has to be their healing effect on respiratory problems. Hot peppers have always played an important role in traditional Chinese medicine. They are recognised for their ability to tackle pulmonary and respiratory illnesses. Peppers contain " capsaicin " which helps the lungs function more effectively. In addition, a daily intake of peppers is highly recommended for smokers and even non-smokers. The health benefits of a daily intake of peppers are well established. Eating peppers can: * Reduce respiratory illnesses * Help asthmatics breathe more easily * Control and often cure sinus and nasal passage problems * Reduce headaches * Provide a major source of vitamin C Chop Up Some Onions -- They're Good for You! Don't cry for onions -- embrace them! They may be synonymous with tears and onion breath, but they're essential to cooks everywhere for their unique flavor. They're also good for you. It's true that these underground globes don't offer a whole lot of nutrients, but what they have in bulk are powerful sulfur-containing compounds, which are responsible for their pungent odor -- and many of their health benefits. According to several studies, onions may help bring down high blood sugar in diabetic animals. In one Egyptian study of diabetic rats, onion juice reduced blood sugar levels by an amazing 70 percent. One of few published studies in humans, from India, dates back some 30 years, but it found that people with diabetes who ate 2 ounces (60 g) of onions a day experienced a significant drop in blood sugar levels. Researchers credit these effects to the sulfur compounds in onions as well as their flavonoids. These powerful antioxidant compounds also help fight some of the side effects of high blood sugar, not to mention heart disease. Onions even seem to boost HDL, the " good " cholesterol. One study found that people who ate the most onions, along with other foods rich in flavonoids, had a 20 percent lower risk of heart disease. Thanks to their sulfur compounds, onions, like aspirin, also help prevent dangerous blood clots. And they're known to help lower high blood pressure. Onions are one of the richest food sources of chromium, a trace mineral that improves the body's ability to respond to insulin. Health Bonus Onions' sulfur compounds and flavonoids may help fend off several forms of cancer. One Chinese study found that men who ate at least 1 tablespoon of chopped onions and other related vegetables (garlic, scallions, chives, and leeks) a day had about half the risk of developing prostate cancer compared to men who ate less than 1/4 tablespoon of these veggies daily. There's also a link between a high intake of flavonoids and reduced risk of lung cancer. Evidence suggests that onions may help preserve bone and prevent osteoporosis. And because the sulfur compounds are strongly anti-inflammatory, onions may also help relieve the pain and swelling of arthritis. The green tops of scallions, or spring onions, are rich in vitamin C and beta-carotene. Glycemic Load: Very low There is overwhelming evidence to suggest that you can boost your health by eating garlic, onions and peppers, on a regular basis. Work them into your daily diet by eating them raw (ideally) or cooked. Use them as flavouring, crush, mince or chop them and include this powerful trio in as many ordinary, day-to-day recipes as you can. Don't just think of them as occasional food items to be used for special meals or when entertaining. Instead, for example, add them to veggies burgers, casseroles and salads etc. Let your imagination come up with new ways of incorporating them into your daily diet - ideas that will really suit you and fit in with your family eating preferences Here is more info about Onions. - http://www.onions-usa.org/about/nutrition.asp
Guest guest
RE: Onions and Garlic beneifits for the body Thank you for " defending " the honor of onions, garlic and peppers! I love them, use them, cook with them and hope no one minds my breath after I've eaten them! LOL! This may only be a wives' tale (re: garlic), but I heard it somewhere--so long ago I forgot where. Almost all my life I have taken garlic--eaten it or swallowed capsules of the oil of garlic (and not the " odorless kind " )--because it supposedly " repelled " mosquitoes from biting! Does it work? Well, I don't use any kind of chemical (commercial) insect repellent, and I have only RARELY gotten mosquito-bitten in many, many years. Next January, my DH and I are planning a trip to western Africa (a country in the " malaria belt " of the thrid world) and our advisors have told us already (several times) to " take some DEET-containing insect repellent! " I am chemically-sensitive to nearly ALL chemical concoctions (the " -cides " , the repellants, etc.) I am seriously thinking about either finding a " natural " alternative topical and/or relying solely on taking numerous garlic capsules (and smelling like a cut-down garlic field) in order to be safe against the more dangerous malaria-carrying mosquitoes. As for peppers--YES! I believe that with all my heart! My DH's maternal grandfather, back when we first got married, had had emphysema for years. The grandparents drove out to visit us once, and I remember Grandpa getting up first thing in the morning and looking around for some " hot pepper sauce " . I can't remember just what kind of " hot pepper sauce " he had, but he took a whole jar of my home-canned tomatoes and dumped a few of them into a bowl, doused it all with hot sauce and chowed it down. It seemed to help his breathing, and he did have severe breathing problems. About a year later, Grandpa suddenly passed away. His heart gave out, no doubt a side result of his lung problems. But I think his daily consuming of large amounts of red pepper, either as raw (when he could get it) or dried flakes or as the " hot sauce " stuff--kept him going far longer than he would have without it. Whenever I start to have sinus, allergy, cold, throat- or upper respiratory congestion of any kind, I slug down about a teaspoon of tabasco with a " chaser " of orange juice (the ONLY way it " works " !) It always seems to clear it out pretty fast and I feel as though I have had a " decongestant " without taking any pills at all! I read years ago that one RIPE (red-colored) bell pepper has FIVE times the ascorbic acid (vitamin C) as an orange does. Now, I think THAT is a fruit that ought to be made into a juice--it's got to be good! Thank you for all the interesting information! --Laura B., in Illinois >>...Health benefits of garlic, onions and peppers contain natural chemicals that can have powerful health boosting effects on the body.
