Guest guest
I am sure they are very cute! According to our vet, though, you need to be very careful around wild raccoons as they can carry and transmit rabies even though they themselves are not showing any symptoms of the disease. Rabies seems to be on the rise after a number of years with lulls in the disease. We, in Texas, have definitely seen a rise in cases....there have been two or three rabid animals found in Rusk County since January of 2008 and that is after 20 or more years of no rabies cases reported at all. Several surrounding counties, Cherokee, Henderson and Gregg have also shown a rise in this past couple of years. The animals that can carry and transmit rabies without showing symptoms, if I understand correctly, are raccoons, skunks and bats. Just want everyone to be safe while we are enjoying all of nature's wildlife. Nancy C. East Texas We have a family of them that are in our yard throughout the year. They eat with the feral cats that are here as we feed them all. We also have a possum that comes also. Guest guest
You are correct about rabies in Texas, and there is also Southern State where this is a problem....I am fortunate to live in IL where no raccoon rabies have been found in 50 years I believe...1 case of a skunk in Southern IL last year, and Bats have rabies in most states but all this is far overblown. Having said that...still you are far more likely to catch a fatal disease from another human than you are from being around your native wildlife. I've been around animals my whole life and never caught a disease from wild or domestic. If you should spot an animal acting " clumsy " or suspicious you should contact animal control as it may have distemper (not transmittable to humans) or rabies. These animals will have neurological signs...acting confused like. nancihank <nancihank wrote: I am sure they are very cute! Guest guest
Oh, you are so lucky and I will sure say a prayer that it stays that way in Illinois. It has just been in the last few years that Texas has seen this reappearance of rabies. We have 12 dogs so we make sure that their rabies vaccinations are up to date even though it is a fairly expensive vet bill. All but one gets them at the same time...Jackson (named for General Andrew Jackson), our solid black dachshund, gets his shots in November.....and they also get their yearly " other " vaccinations as well. I saw puppies once, a long time ago, that had distemper....all of them died. Poor, poor babies....it was awful, and it made a big impression on me. I don't want to see any animal, wild or domestic, die from a preventable disease. Good luck with your backyard brood! Nancy C. Guest guest
can't say for sure but I heard that in Canada they do a bait drop to vaccinate wildlife (raccoons mostly) for both Rabies and Distemper....Distemper here is very bad. I cannot take in any adult hit by car or HBC untill my babies are released due to most HBC will have distemper as per my wildlife vet. Big thing...GET all pets vaccinated! if nancihank <nancihank wrote: Oh, you are so lucky and I will sure say a prayer that it stays that way in Illinois.
