People have mentioned lots of wonderful things (Oh how I want a

Vitamix:)), but something I really love that hasn't been mentioned is

a VillaWare UNO Grand Wrap, Tortilla and flat bread maker. It is

awesome. Oh yeah, my Nutrimill (grain mill), and Breadman Ultimate

(bread maker).

There is nothing like fresh milled grain and home-made bread of any

kind!

I got my vitamix at a home and garden show that comes to town 2 times a year.

They sell them this way so they can demonstrate the product. It is amazing.

After you see all it can do first hand you don't think about all the money it

costs. lol It is quite pricey, but it will last a lifetime. You can pass it on.I

would not trade mine for the world. It is a vegetarian/vegan's partner. You can

make anything from hot soups, dips, dressings, smoothies, cool drinks,to actual

sorbets & ice creams, it chops, purees, dices, many, many uses. You can buy the

attachment to make bread. A real workhorse.(lol, I sound like I work for

them...lol I don't)

You might go to their website. I bet you can buy one there.

Another item I love is more of a gadget, but it bears mentioning -- the

Back to Basics Apple Peeler:

http://www.amazon.com/Back-Basics-Apple-Potato-Peeler/dp/B0000DE2SS/ref=sr_1_1?i\

e=UTF8 & s=home-garden & qid=1211207548 & sr=8-1

I bought this several years ago and my kids love it. It simultaneously

cores the apple, removes the peel and cuts the apple into one long

spiral. My eldest daughter uses it the most - she really enjoys an

apple snack and she also saves and eats most of the peel.

If you remove the apple spiral (it comes off in one single apple-shaped

piece) and then cut it down the middle (a single cut of the knife) you

have perfect apple slices. My youngest daughter used this technique on

Mother's Day to make a quick apple crisp (it takes no time at all to cut

piles of apples) and I used it last night to make rhubarb applesauce. YUM!

I love my Cuisinart blender/processor combo and use it nearly everyday - in the

morning for shakes or smoothees and later in the evening for chopping and

purees. It's invaluable.

I'm also nuts for my breadmaker. After putting it away for a couple of years

and feeling it too cumbersome to deal with, I came to my senses when even

mediocre bread in the Bay Area hit about $3.50 a loaf. So, now, once I week, I'm

making a bread that takes no real effort on my part, and is essentially whole

grains and good for us.

Has to be my bread maker!

Not only can you make loaves, it also makes dough, jam and cakes.

I can't remember the last time I bought a loaf of bread.

Also use my food processor all the time for making roast tomato sauce,

meringues, soups, breadcrumbs, smoothies.....oh the list goes on!

That is what my apple peeler does as well. For some reason, I was thinking

that

is how most of the clamp-on-the-counter kind work. Maybe some work

differently?

Hi!

Only appliances I regularly use - Microwave, Toaster Oven, Coffee

Maker. I have others but don't really use them.

I am usually a lurker but always come here to browse recipes. I

normally eat meat, but this group just had some great recipes!

I second the bread machine. With 7 kids, I bake alot of bread. I actually

have 2 but the older one is not working right so I use on the dough cycle.

I make all of bread-its much better for us and usaually less expensive. My

kids love smoothies so our blender gets alot use also.

Breadmaker - used once every week or two. I far prefer the

bread we make to most commercially available breads.

However for the three or four months I lived in Germany a number

of years ago, I liked more of their varieties of store bread.

Coffee maker - every day. Sometimes on weekend I use a French

Press though for coffee. (and my espressos maker)

Microwave - ease of use.

Toaster - I like toast.

Panini - Good grilled cheese sandwiches.

I think I would like to get a juicer. I've been making a lot of

lemon/limeade lately.

I like our rice steamer too. Probably more but that's what come

to mind at the moment.

I could never get 100% whole grain bread to come out of my bread machine right

so tossed it and back the old fashion way. Even with grinding my own wheat I

have a loaf ready to eat in about two hours using my kitchen-aid mixer. If you

have a recipe for 100% whole grain bread that works in the bread machine, I

would love to hear about it.

a demo show and sale about 4 times a year. You can also order them online.

I love my Krups sandwich maker. We make veggie sandwiches all the time. The kids

have grilled cheese for lunch and/or cheese and egg sandwiches for breakfast. It

comes out almost every day. Best part is that I got it at Goodwill for $5.99.

Along with several appliances already mentioned here, I get lots of use

out of my immersion blender, which enables me to liquefy soups without

having to remove them from the pot, and also my spice grinder, without

which all the hot peppers I grow and dry would probably take over my

entire kitchen!

Whatever whole grains I am using for my bread, I found I always have to add some

vital wheat gluten, otherwise, it's heavy as abrick and does not rise as well.

That's the only tyrick I know of - but, it works.

Katie,

I regularly bake wholegrain bread in my bread maker and it always

comes out lovely. Try either of these recipes depending on the type

of maker you have:

550g (1lb 4oz) strong wholegrain flour

2 tablespoons (tbs) sugar (I use unbleached sugar)

25g (1oz) butter

1 1/2 teaspoons (tsp) salt

380ml water

1 1/4 tsp dried easy yeast

Put the water, butter and salt in the pan first, then add the

flour/sugar mixure, make a well in the centre and pour in the yeast.

I manly use the following recipe though, called a Sandwich Loaf on my

maker, as it gives a softer loaf.

400g (14oz) strong wholegrain flour

1 tbs sugar

15g (1/2oz) butter

1 tsp salt

310ml water

1/2 tsp dried easy yeast

Done in the same way as the above.

Both recipes take 5 hours in my maker but the bread is so nice so

worth the wait!

Give them a go if you can, seems a shame to get rid of your maker as

they are such great machines and so much easier. I put mine on at

night on timer so I wake up to fresh warm bread in the morning.

Love my bread maker even though I only use it twice a month maybe, do

not eat allot of bread anymore.

I have a few appliances I use on a regular basis.

Toaster Convection Oven daily, mini blender like once a week mainly to

make Hummus, Microwave makes heating up leftovers speedy, dog does not

like to wait.

The water cooler mainly for the fact I can make hot tea when I ever I

want.

I did get rid of the stove/oven a few years ago so I had to get a

single burner like camp stove to cook with. Use it allot. Was not

planning on cooking anymore that is why the stove was taken out of the

house.

Last item is the rice cooker I use it at least every other week.

Perfect I can make a weeks worth of rice at one time.

My choice would be my large Crockpot. It's so nice to put a roast and

veggies in, go work on something, and come in to the smell of a home

cooked meal. Come to think of it, that's why I like my bread machine,

too. The smell of bread baking always reminds me of Grandma's house

and all the love we got there.

Out of my kitchen gadgets, although not an appliance, my absolute

favorite is a boiled egg timer. You put it in the pan with your eggs.

The color changes as the eggs cook, letting you know what stage the

eggs are have reached. I know boiled eggs sound so simple, but we've

had quite a few catastrophes with under- or over-cooked eggs. Not

since I picked up this timer. Each of my sons wants one for himself.

They truly love deviled eggs which are much better now that we are

cooking them right.

---1. My small waffle maker, I can easily make 12 waffles on the

weekend and freeze left overs for quick breakfasts.

2.my mini food processor, it gets the job done with less clean up than

a large one.

3. my super convection oven! Bakes and roasts in record time!

I have an egg cooker that I've had for ages.

Cooks up to 7 eggs. Put in an amount of water

specified by lines in the cooker for soft boiled,

hard boiled or poached. Water boils out, egg

cooker turns itself off. I've only had a few eggs

in many years push outside of their shell.

Thank you. I did not actually throw out the bread maker; I just

moved it to the garage and never use it any more. Sometimes when my

daughter and her family come I get it out to make while or oatmeal

bread, but husband and I only eat whole grain, so I don't use it.

The second recipe is exactly like the one in the instruction/recipe

book, and it still donesn't come out right.

Do you hae a one paddle or a two paddle machine. I have been

thinking that maybe it bakes different in a horizontal, rather than a

verticle loaf.

I've been inspired to hunt down a breadmaker from this group! I could

swear my mom has one when the 'machines' first came out. I have to

ask her about it.

I love my blender. I use it for sauces, soups, babyfood, smoothies...
