What products to buy?

Good Morning all,

Today is the start of week two of the veg lifestyle. The first two weeks

were about taking meat out of our diets.

Now next week it is grocery shopping and I would like to start weeding out

products that I usually buy that are made with animal products.

I'm not weeding out dairy yet since I don't eat a lot of that anyway..

There are so many ingredients that are animal products, how do you keep

track of all of it?

Did you start by just replacing a few items at a time or did you spend hours

in the grocery stores reading labels.

Right now I am going through my cupboards and looking at the label of foods

I normally buy. Then I'll figure out what to replace them with.

I normally buy Fig Newtons. Maybe the sugar free ones will work out since

they don't have sugar.

No more chocolate chip cookie, 100 calorie snacks.

Any tips for grocery shopping and staying away from animal products would be

most helpful.

And any tips for what to buy since I need to lose weight would be helpful.

Thanks

Tami

I wouldn't buy the sugar free fig newtons...don't they contain a sugar

substitute? I bet there is a good recipe using date sugar somewhere (I need to

start looking, as they are sounding really good to me LOL ) Other than that, I

just replaced things as they were out and needed replacing. I don't have enough

$$$ to buy all new :)

Congrats on surviving the first 2 weeks. It gets much easier as habits form,

and there are so many recipes in the files, you never get bored! :)

Tami, what I do (and I am sure many other here too) is buy some pantry

essentials, non perishables, like spices, herbs, seasonings, beans,

olive oil, nuts, seeds, rice, other grains, and flours (I make my

bread often). I try to keep my pantry stocked with these items. This

way you just buy the fruits and vegetables that are in season, tofu if

you use that, look in the files and find recipes to cook them with. I

avoid regular supermarkets since I find cheaper, fresher and more

local veggies in either farmers markets or ethnic markets. The less

packaged and processed the items you buy, the less expensive they will

be and the healthier they will be too, also less chance of non veggie

stuff creeping in there...Good luck in your shopping and enjoy the

process!

Be on the lookout for high fructose corn syrup, it's not an animal

product but it's in SO many things (catsup is one!).
