Guest guest
I've been semi-vegetarian for many years now. I say " semi " because I was born and raised in West Texas and if you know anything about my part of the country, you know that this is Longhorn country! I was raised eating some sort of animal at every meal. As I grew older though, I became more and more intrigued by the vegetarian lifestyle and when I had children of my own I realized that meat wasn't necessarily good for them. I learned that meat wasn't readily digestable and that there were definitely other sources of protein. Now, that my children are grown and doing their own thing, I never buy meat at the store, and there's no meat in my house. I will occasionally (maybe once or twice a month) eat a meal containing meat, though. I'm very pleased about discovering this group and I have several vegetarian recipes I'd love to share! Thank you, Melissa
Guest guest
I am Katie, I live in Anchorage. I am so glad you found this group. I look forward to the recipies you choose to share and I do hope you will spend some time browsing in our recipe files. Sometimes particular recipies are hard to find, but they are all there and every one is TNT, Tried aNd True. As soon as you start reading recipies you will tun into ones calling for EVOO. That is extra virgin olive oil. It took me a week to figure that out when I joined the group. I became vegetarian about 4 years ago for health reasons and have never looked back. Several things that had plagued me for years that doctors couldn't figure out suddenly stopped bothering me as soon as I quit putting that stuff in my body. I was hoping it would lower my cholesterol, which it did for only a short time, but the health benefits are enormous even without that. Guest guest
( Reply to Katie and Melissa) Hi! I wholeheartedly agree with you on that count! Like Melissa, for my DH and me, it's still the " almost " or " semi " -vegetarian stage, but I have not purchased meat in at least 3 months, and we only eat it (DH much more often than me) maybe once a week, sometimes less. Katie, I can identify with what you wrote about, too. For several years, I have had some puzzling " health problems " that doctors (including an " allergist " ) could not explain, but which plagued me, to varying degrees, year-around. My suspicion was pesticide residues and/or hormone/antibiotic additives in " meats " and a few other foods. ( I knew that anything with " corn products " in it, if not strictly " organic " by label, was bad, too!) Not eating meats this spring has been amazing to me--because this is the worst time of year (normally) that I am bothered by these issues--espeically with skin problems. Most of the time now, I not only feel better--much better--in a general sense, but I also have an un-accustomed freedom from the skin issues. I still live in chemically-saturated " corn-soybean-cattle/pork/poultry-dairy " farming country, and this poses its own problems, environmentally. However, I am thrilled that I have found this group and have enthusiastically followed several of the recipes here. Even more, the ideas exchanged and the advice given by group members is enormously encouraging and helpful! Melissa, welcome! I hope you enjoy this group as much as I have and find here the encouragement and friendship of these nice people! Guest guest
It's such a pleasure to meet you! I too have been plagued with health problems. Just recently I had an attack of Gout. I've done some reading about it and discovered that Gout can be brought on by nitrates commonly found in cold cuts. The last attack I had was brought on when I was staying at my son's house and I was making ham sandwiches about every other day. Needless to say, I've steered clear of ALL lunch meats and started using hummus for a quick lunch time sandwich. It's already made and I can just through it onto a multigrain bun and through some spinach and red onion on it. And let me tell ya, It's a heck of a lot more satisfying than a ham and cheese sandwich! LOL! Thanks for all the welcome messages! I'm home!! LOL! Melissa -- In , " L.B.
