Guest guest
Salmonella. Why would one get salmonella from tomatoes? That is what the news say and they attribute it to animal manure. They throw manure on crops without composting? not nice. Does anyone has additional information? Also, remember it was from raw tomatoes, not cooked. , Donnalilacflower <thelilacflower wrote: > > > I caught a small part of the news just now. Guest guest
Here is an email that was sent to me from a supermarket I frequent here in Houston. Dear JEANNIE, The Food and Drug Administration is alerting consumers in New Mexico and Texas that a salmonellosis outbreak appears to be linked to consumption of certain types of raw red tomatoes and products containing raw red tomatoes. The specific type and source of tomatoes are under investigation. However, preliminary data suggest that raw red plum, red Roma, or round red tomatoes are the cause. At this time, consumers in New Mexico and Texas should limit their tomato consumption to tomatoes that have not been implicated in the outbreak. These include cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, tomatoes sold with the vine still attached, and tomatoes grown at home. We will monitor any further advisory and keep you posted. Rice Epicurean Markets would like you to know that all the tomatoes we buy are from suppliers that are Primus Certified and must meet strict guide lines to insure food safety, including: safe farming practices, sanitary packing facilities, proper storage temperatures, and safety checks for bacteria. All produce should be thoroughly washed before eating. Even if you plan to peel the produce before eating, it is still important to wash it first. It is recommended to cook tomatoes to 145 degrees for at least 15 seconds to insure they are safe to eat. Information on safe handling of produce can be found at www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/prodsafe.html Tomato consumer page can be found at http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/tomatoes.html Updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/ Thank you for your business!
