Guest guest
I received this in an email today and thought I would pass it along. & nbsp; & nbsp; & gt; & gt; MSG (a slow poison) & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; MSG The food additive MSG (Mono-Sodium Glutamate) is a slow poison. & nbsp; MSG & gt; & gt; hides behind 25 or more names, such as Natural Flavoring.' MSG is even in & gt; & gt; your favorite coffee from Tim Horton's and Starbucks coffee shops! & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; I wondered if there could be an actual chemical causing the massive & gt; & gt; obesity epidemic, and so did a friend of mine, John Erb. & nbsp; He was a & gt; & gt; research assistant at the University of Waterloo in Ontario , Canada , & gt; & gt; and spent years working for the government. & nbsp; He made an amazing discovery & gt; & gt; while going through scientific journals for a book he was writing called & gt; & gt; The Slow Poisoning of America. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; In hundreds of studies around the world, scientists were creating obese & gt; & gt; mice and rats to use in diet or diabetes test studies. & gt; & gt; No strain of rat or mice is naturally obese, so scientists have to create & gt; & gt; them. & nbsp; They make these creatures morbidly obese by injecting them with & gt; & gt; MSG when they are first born. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; The MSG triples the amount of insulin the pancreas creates, causing rats & gt; & gt; (and perhaps humans) to become obese. & nbsp; They even have a name for the fat & gt; & gt; rodents they create: & nbsp; 'MSG-Treated Rats.' When I heard this, I was & gt; & gt; shocked. & nbsp; I went into my kitchen and checked the cupboards and the & gt; & gt; refrigerator. & nbsp; MSG was in everything -- the Campbell 's soups, the & gt; & gt; Hostess Doritos, the Lays flavored potato chips, Top Ramen, Betty Crocker & gt; & gt; Hamburger Helper, Heinz canned gravy, Swanson frozen prepared meals, and & gt; & gt; Kraft salad dressings, especially the 'healthy low-fat' ones. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; The items that didn't have MSG marked on the product label had something & gt; & gt; called 'Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein,' which is just another name for & gt; & gt; Monosodium Glutamate. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; It was shocking to see just how many of the foods we feed our children & gt; & gt; everyday are filled with this stuff. & nbsp; MSG is hidden under many different & gt; & gt; names in order to fool those who read the ingredient list, so that they & gt; & gt; don't catch on. & nbsp; (Other names for MSG are 'Accent, 'Aginomoto,' 'Natural & gt; & gt; Meat Tenderizer,' etc.) & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; But it didn't stop there. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; When our family went out to eat, we started asking at the restaurants & gt; & gt; what menu items contained MSG. & nbsp; Many employees, even the managers, swore & gt; & gt; they didn't use MSG. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; But when we ask for the ingredient list, which they grudgingly provided, & gt; & gt; sure enough, MSG and Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein were everywhere. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; Burger King, McDonald's, Wendy's, Taco Bell, every restaurant -- even the & gt; & gt; sit-down eateries like TGIF, Chili's, Applebee's, and Denny's -- use MSG & gt; & gt; in abundance. & nbsp; Kentucky Fried Chicken seemed to be the WORST offender: & gt; & gt; MSG was in every chicken dish, salad dressing. & nbsp; and gravy. & nbsp; No wonder I & gt; & gt; loved to eat that coating on the skin -- their secret spice was MSG! & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; So why is MSG in so many of the foods we eat? & nbsp; Is it a preservative, or a & gt; & gt; vitamin? & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; Not according to my friend John Erb. & nbsp; In his book The Slow Poisoning of & gt; & gt; America, he said that MSG is added to food for the addictive effect it & gt; & gt; has on the human body. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; Even the propaganda website sponsored by the food manufacturers lobby & gt; & gt; group supporting MSG explains that the reason they add it to food is to & gt; & gt; make people eat more. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; A study of the elderly showed that older people eat more of the foods & gt; & gt; that it is added to. & nbsp; The Glutamate Association lobbying group says & gt; & gt; eating more is a benefit to the elderly, but what does it do to the rest & gt; & gt; of us? & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; 'Betcha can't eat [just] one,' takes on a whole new meaning where MSG is & gt; & gt; concerned! & nbsp; And we wonder why the nation is overweight! & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; MSG manufacturers themselves admit that it addicts people to their & gt; & gt; products. & nbsp; It makes people choose their product over others, and makes & gt; & gt; people eat more of it than they would if MSG wasn't added. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; Not only is MSG scientifically proven to cause obesity, it is an & gt; & gt; addictive substance. & nbsp; Since its introduction into the American food & gt; & gt; supply fifty years ago, MSG has been added in larger and larger doses to & gt; & gt; the pre-packaged meals, soups, snacks, and fast foods we are tempted to & gt; & gt; eat everyday. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; The FDA has set no limits on how much of it can be added to food. & gt; & gt; They claim it's safe to eat in any amount. & nbsp; But how can they claim it's & gt; & gt; safe when there are hundreds of scientific studies with titles like & gt; & gt; these: & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; 'The monosodium glutamate (MSG) obese rat as a model for the study of & gt; & gt; exercise in obesity.' Gobatto CA, Mello MA, Souza CT, Ribeiro IA. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; Res Commun Mol Pathol Pharmacol. & nbsp; 2002. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; 'Adrenalectomy abolishes the food-induced hypothalamic serotonin release & gt; & gt; in both normal and monosodium glutamate-obese rats.' Guimaraes RB, Telles & gt; & gt; MM, Coelho VB, Mori C, Nascimento CM, Ribeiro. & nbsp; Brain Res Bull. & gt; & gt; 2002 Aug. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; 'Obesity induced by neonatal monosodium glutamate treatment in & gt; & gt; spontaneously hypertensive rats: & nbsp; An animal model of multiple risk & gt; & gt; factors.' Iwase M, Yamamoto M, Iino K, Ichikawa K, Shinohara N, Yoshinari & gt; & gt; Fujishima. & gt; & gt; Hypertens Res. & nbsp; 1998 Mar. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; 'Hypothalamic lesion induced by injection of monosodium glutamate in & gt; & gt; suckling period and subsequent development of obesity.' Tanaka K, Shimada & gt; & gt; M, Nakao K Kusunoki. & nbsp; Exp Neurol. & nbsp; 1978 Oct. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; No, the date of that last study was not a typo; it was published in & gt; & gt; 1978. & nbsp; Both the 'medical research community' and 'food manufacturers' & gt; & gt; have known about the side effects of MSG for decades. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; Many more of the studies mentioned in John Erb's book link MSG to & gt; & gt; diabetes, migraines and headaches, autism, ADHD, and even Alzheimer's. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; So what can we do to stop the food manufactures from dumping this & gt; & gt; fattening and addictive MSG into our food supply and causing the obesity & gt; & gt; epidemic we now see? & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; Several months ago, John Erb took his book and his concerns to one of the & gt; & gt; highest government health officials in Canada . & gt; & gt; While he was sitting in the government office, the official told him, & gt; & gt; 'Sure, I know how bad MSG is. & nbsp; I wouldn't touch the stuff.' But this & gt; & gt; top-level government official refuses to tell the public what he knows. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; The big media doesn't want to tell the public either, fearing issues with & gt; & gt; their advertisers. & nbsp; It seems that the fallout on the fast food industry & gt; & gt; may hurt their profit margin. & nbsp; The food producers and restaurants have & gt; & gt; been addicting us to their products for years, and now we are paying the & gt; & gt; price for it. & nbsp; Our children should not be cursed with obesity caused by & gt; & gt; an addictive food additive. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; But what can I do about it? & nbsp; I'm just one voice! & nbsp; What can I do to stop & gt; & gt; the poisoning of our children, while our governments are insuring & gt; & gt; financial protection for the industry that is poisoning us? & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; This message is going out to everyone I know in an attempt to tell you & gt; & gt; the truth that the corporate-owned politicians and media won't tell you. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; The best way you can help to save yourself and your children from this & gt; & gt; drug-induced epidemic is to forward this article to everyone. & gt; & gt; With any luck, it will circle the globe before politicians can pass the & gt; & gt; legislation protecting those who are poisoning us. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; The food industry learned a lot from the tobacco industry. & gt; & gt; Imagine if big tobacco had a bill like this in place before someone blew & gt; & gt; the whistle on nicotine? & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; If you are one of the few who can still believe that MSG is good for us & gt; & gt; and you don't believe what John Erb has to say, see for yourself. & nbsp; Go to & gt; & gt; the National Library of Medicine at www.pubmed.com. & nbsp; Type in the words & gt; & gt; 'MSG Obese' and read a few of the 115 medical studies that appear. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; We the public do not want to be rats in one giant experiment, and we do & gt; & gt; not approve of food that makes us into a nation of obese, lethargic, & gt; & gt; addicted sheep, feeding the food industry's bottom line while waiting for & gt; & gt; the heart transplant, the diabetic-induced amputation, blindness, or & gt; & gt; other obesity-induced, life-threatening disorders. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; With your help we can put an end to this poison. & nbsp; Do your part in sending & gt; & gt; this message out by word of mouth, e-mail, or by distribution of this & gt; & gt; printout to your friends all over the world and stop this 'Slow Poisoning & gt; & gt; of Mankind' by the packaged food industry. & gt; & gt; & gt; & gt; Blowing the whistle on MSG is our responsibility, so get the word out. & nbsp;Barb & nbsp;

Guest guest
People come along and post all types of garbage on the Net. You have to make sure a link is from a reliable source. I take most of the info I read with a grain of salt and I do an intense search for more information. An urban myth can really damage business when false word gets out there. Guest guest
I have seen much misinformation posted about soy, Braggs Amino and other products on the Internet. You have to really do a good search for yourself online. Tossing company names is very damaging, there is my 2 cents worth. Guest guest
I read on the history of MSG. What that email said it's true. I received it as well a couple of weeks back and I was very reluctant to believe it (specially when some " friend " start sending it out as a chain). I did my research and found out how it all started with Soy Sauce, which brings out the flavor on other things. It is used to salt foods, and you can see MSG in the powdered and cubed bouillon. I didn't believe it when I went shopping at Walmart (don't usually do this, but had to that time) and saw that EVERYTHING has MSG, and they justify its use because it brings out the flavors (or " flavorings " if you catch my drift). I'm not a coffee drinker so I haven't checked the coffee, but I swear everything under the sun, made for the general public to consume, has this thing. I'd also like to add that I'm from Argentina, and though we do have obese people, it is not the way it is here in America. My husband weights 400lbs. and his obesity started when he was 5. His mom fed them bologna sandwiches and let them raise themselves (she was a drug addict at the time) or fast food. About a year ago he found out he had a testosterone defficiency and high blood pressure. I " made " him stop all fast food (I never liked it since I got here) and shopped organic whenever possible, buying products from good sources like " Whole Foods " or " Trader Joe's " . He lost about 100 lbs. About 2 months ago realized he didn't need his blood pressure meds, he was within normal range and he keeps on losing weight, exercising and eating better. When we received the email about MSG, everything made sense to me... he is almost " too typical " and his health problems are so many it never made sense to me... if you can fatten a rat with it, why not a human, since you start giving them formula, making them dependent on the " flavorings " , so they consume more. Anyhow, I personally, gained a lot of weight since I moved to America, blame it on the hormones in the meat (which I've entirely stopped now) or the MSG... but I started the same program with my carnivorous husband about a year ago and we've both seen the results. I do not trust any product that has names on the ingredient list that I can't pronounce or that for something easy as " juice " has more than 5 ingredients (whic makes no sense to me, when I can buy the organic fruit and juice it myself and say that it contains " x " fruit, only 1 ingredient). Sorry for writting a novel, it's just that I'm passionate about this food issues, specially with my husband's issues. Hopefully he'll stop eating meat and help himself even further. Thanks for all the posts. Guest guest
I can't stress it enough. & nbsp; I will have a head slpitter of a migraine from MSG so cook your own food. & nbsp; You will know what goes in the pot. & nbsp; If you want to enhance the flavor if you toss in a piece of kombu into your recipes, it's natures MSG. & nbsp; I add it to soups, stews, and beans. & nbsp; I avoid all the jars of sauces and dressings. & nbsp; You can make a huge soup pot of veggie broth with your left over trimmings from vegetables and freeze it. & nbsp; Buy bulk beans, legumes and grains. & nbsp; It is so much healthier this way.
