Guest guest
Believe it or not things are changing. My niece and her husband are resident docs at UCLA. She is vegetarian and after going through medical college her husband is 90% vegetarian, they saw plenty of nightmares due to a non-vegetarian diets loaded with fried foods and high amounts of dairy and eggs. They have many resident docs working with them and they are now vegetarians too, a few are in the group to use our recipes since they have very little time to post and they know our recipes are TNT good ones. I agree, the drug companies are all about making $$$ and making people sick with their medications and they reward the docs for using their meds, especially the blood pressure meds, and cholesterol meds, the docs won't recommend a healthy vegetarian diet, now and then they will tell you to see a nutritionist but rarely. There are plenty of people on certain medications that are helping them get through life and we do have to be thankful those meds are available. There is nothing in this world that will get rid of my migraines but Imitex and I know it has side effects but then so does the migraine so I do take it if needed. They will tell people to give up meat and have baked chicken and fish. I think the patient has no idea since they have high cholesterol and think the doc put them on a vegetarian diet. Many non-vegs think cutting out red meat is a huge change and such a restricted diet. My ex-butcher Uncle had no clue what to eat when beef was taken from his diet. He called himself a vegetarian. > Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile > Donna, you know, this just happened to me! I recently went to the doctor, had a bunch of tests done and my cholesterol was a little too high (genetics). He said I should eat chicken and fish. I said I would not, that I had been eating vegetarian food for the last 25 years. Beef, chicken and fish all have 70 mg cholesterol per 100 grams (it is not a secret, it is in any nutritional table) all the same! I guess flesh is flesh. So eating a piece of chicken instead of an equal size piece of beef will no do much for your cholesterol level, so why are they advising this? Of course, organ meats, shrimp/crab/ lobster and eggs are much worse (....but he did not say anything about that). The really sad part of this is that apparently MDs know very little about nutrition, but they are THE DOCTOR so people believe that they do, and they take their bad advice. This way the medical establishment can sell you statin drugs to lower your cholesterol. Advising people to take on a vegan or low fat vegetarian diet will not make profits for the medical/pharmaceuti cal industry.
Guest guest
Sharon, this is very interesting about the weight. I am pretty light already, so it would not be healthy for me to lose any weight. On the other hand, I was vegan for 3 years and it was the first time in my life my cholesterol was low. I had a hard time keeping my weight though (got too skinny), and I went back to ovo lacto. Maybe my solution is to go vegan but to eat more nuts. Nuts have a lot of fat (good fat) and add a lot of calories, with a great assortment of many minerals that our body needs. By the way, there are (at least) two vegan foods that will increase your cholesterol, and that is palm oil and coconut. Not bad in moderate quantities, but if you have that problem you might want to avoid those too. Guest guest
Great news on the new MDs! My (new) doctor is an older fellow. He also studied at UCLA. Other than his relative ignorance about nutrition he seems knowledgeable about medicine. It is just sad to see this nutritional misinformation being propagated (he has a lot of patients). , Donnalilacflower <thelilacflower wrote: > > Believe it or not things are changing. Guest guest
Ah, you're one of those, are you? :-) Yes, vegans who tend to get too skinny have the luxury of eating more of those yummy nuts and plenty of avocado. I have to watch those things like a hawk, myself. :-) (And I never eat palm or coconut oils.) I haven't had my cholesterol checked in ages and I'm very curious about it. Before I started following a vegan diet (I don't call myself a full vegan), my cholesterol was 280. After 3 months of no animal products, it was 199. Three months after that it was 191. I'd like to see it get even lower, but I do have about 40 lbs to lose. I'm facing surgery this summer, so I'm sure I will be finding out what my numbers are soon enough. :-) For those of you who are math challenged, by eating a vegan diet I lowered my cholesterol 32% in 6 months. That sure shows how pathetic those cereal adds are that tell you after eating their cereal every day for 6 weeks it will lower your cholesterol a whopping 4%.
