Guest guest
I am very interested in learning about sugar substitutes that people like. I have been prediabetic or close to being prediabetic for years now and I try very hard to not use a lot of sugar. I would rather use real sugar than Equal, or Splenda or the pink one who's name escapes me at the moment; I'm just not comfortable putting those things in my body. I know that there is something called Agave, I believe, that I've heard is much sweeter than sugar so you use less. Have any of you used this, is it easy to use, how does it taste, and is there anything else I should know about it? Does anyone have any other suggestions that are also good substitutes for sugar? I appreciate the wealth of information that comes from this group and the very respectful approach of everyone in it. I'm pretty okay depriving myself of sweetness with my tea, I guess I've gotten used to it, but I would like to find something that would work well in recipes since I really do have a sweet tooth! Guest guest
I use stevia for sweetening drinks (along with a little raw sugar) but haven't tried it for cooking yet. Guest guest
I have been hypoglycemic since college - almost everyone in my family - immediate and extended has developed diabetes. I haven't used sugar, except in holiday recipes, for years. When I discovered Agave -my world changed! I use about 1/8 tablespoon in my decaf and use it to give a little " texture " to sauces and salad dressings, and even made Ice cream recently with nothing but Coconut milk and agave! It's truly amazing - like honey, only better! Many of the products I use contain Stevia, but I find it tastes better in those products than if I try and use it myself to sweeten something. - Tony
Guest guest
Stevia is a good sub. It is sweeter than sugar. It should be in the health food part of the grocery store. Patty
Guest guest
Hi Sharita, Add me to all the other agave fans on the list I've used it in most every kind of recipe that calls for any kind of sweetener, and really like the way it tastes. Here's a link to the page I've bookmarked for adjusting recipes: http://www.authorsden.com/visit/viewarticle.asp?AuthorID=3680 & id=2344 . Hope this helps! Peace, Mo
Guest guest
There is a good link for Diabetic natural sweetners under the links on our home page. Lots of good info there. Thanks Donna for adding it. I also love agave. I added a little bit to some plain yogurt yesterday that I had mixed in with my dry cereal and it was so good. I've got a stevia plant on my patio this year for the first time. I sure love to pluck off leaves and munch on them. They are so sweet.
