Donna-

Thanks for the tempeh recipe site, Donna-- yours looks wonderful.

Congratulations! We both love pasta. Actually, I made a crockpot

lasagna--I think the problem was it called for 1/2 c fresh basil. We

live in a small town & I couldn't get fresh basil so I bought freeze

dried. I also read later herbs in the crockpot tend to be stronger--I

tried to tell him I thought it was the basil he was objecting to but

he's convinced he hates tempeh! Does tempeh have a strong flavor?

Thank you so very much!

Dried herbs can be up to 3 times stronger than fresh, so you should

have used much less freeze dried basil in this recipe, Ann.

Maybe I should reword my question.... What does it taste like?  I know that tofu

tastes like what ever I season with, so...

How do you steam tempeh? I have one of those fold-up metal steamer things for

veggies but I almost never use it. I like veggies better raw, or disguised so I

can't see them. :-)

have flavor, not sure how to decribe it (nutty, mushroom).....try steaming it

(15 - 20 mins) then add some to chili or a tomato sauce so you can taste it that

way. I like it sliced thin and fried to brown it, then added to dishes

(crumbled in chili, diced smaller and used in a stir fry etc).

That's exactly what I use to steam tempeh! Water in the bottom of the pan, I

cut up the tempeh (it varies what size, depends on what I'm making), bring water

to a boil, reduce heat then steam for 15 mins (it opens up the pores too,

absorbs marinade and flavors better). I prefer it plumped up a bit from the

steam.

I put about 1/2 " water and when its boiling, dump in the cut up tempeh

for 2-5 min..

The tempeh in plain water; makes a light watery sauce for the tempeh..

I add olive oil, cilantro, balsamic vinegar, ginger, nori, Japanese

seasoning, etc to it from here..

I try not to cook things too much..
