Guest guest
I am from central Indiana. What helped me consider becoming a vegetarian was a book I read last spring that included information about cows who were so sick they could not even stand but still were being slaughtered for food. I knew then that I could never eat meat again. What I enjoy most about being a vegetarian is all the new recipes and foods I've found. My tips to new vegetarians would be to join groups like this one and visit the vegetarian cookbook section at your local library.
Guest guest
Our Question of the Week - Where are you from(be as vague or specific as you choose)? Portage County Ohio. In a little town called Diamond. What helped you consider being a vegetarian? Well it would have to be my step sister in law. She was up from Florida and my DH wanted to have her over for dinner before she went back home. I was horrified because she is vegan and I had no clue how to cook for her. I went to the library and checked out a couple cookbooks and made a few very simple recipes for that dinner with her. I loved the way the food tasted and wanted to try other recipes, just vegetarian, not vegan. I found this group, and joined. At that time it was just to make recipes a few times a week not be completely vegetarian. Then I start joining rescue groups and learning about how animals are treated during the whole process to become food. I was in shock and found myself in tears many times as I watched these videos. I also started volunteering at a farm rescue and just couldn't understand how people could harm these creatures. They have personalities and are loving. I made the change and have never looked back. What do you enjoy about being a vegetarian? That is an easy one for me. The food. I mean the never ending different types of food. I don't think I eat the same meal twice a month. I love that I can be a little creative. I say little because I'm still not the best cook, but I have came a long way since my meat cooking days. Like last night I created my own veggie potpie. Even meat eating DH said it tasted really good. The food just looks better. The colors are awesome when you put veggies together. I enjoy using the meat replacement products. I made a yummy bacon tomato bake last weekend with the morning star bacon and it was wonderful. I like knowing the no animal had to suffer and die just so I could have a meal that day. It is so much better for the Earth, also. These days I'm all about going green. What tips do you suggest to new vegetarians? Hang in there. It takes time to make the change completely. Do your research. Check out cookbooks from your library. Search amazon.com for used vegetarian cookbooks, shop thrift stores, yard and garage sales. Use the files here for so many yummy, TNT recipes. Start by making one or two new recipes a week. If you slip up, don't be hard on yourself, it's alright. We are all here to support you and help you are your journey. Don't be afraid to ask us questions we have been where you are before. Even if newbies have asked the same questions before yours is just as important as the person before you. Enjoy yourself and fun with cooking!! Hugs, Mindy

If you are used to a standard american diet (or northern European) just take and pick your favorite meatless meals from different international cuisines, rotate them, and you will see how easy it is - and how much variety you get! - try for example: Italian, middle eastern/greek, French/Spanish, Mexican, south american, Indian, japanese, Chinese, Thai, Indonesian. There you go, 9 different cuisines ( I probably forgot a few) and the week only has 7 days. roseta @ los angeles

Guest guest
Mindy, I have heard plenty of stories about my parents' trips to Portage lakes... I am assuming Diamond is close to there. I was born in Akron and will be visiting my grandparents in West Chester in a week. Your fellow Buckeye, Cassie " life's a garden, dig it! Originally Wisconsin, now Washington state, still a Packers girl tho > > What helped you consider being a vegetarian? My G'ma usually asks me this during dinner but the story isn't dinner-friendly so it doesn't get told often. 20 years ago I was in Sri Lanka in the Peace Corps. At that time, there were about 2 1/2 mini-wars going on. If one went out at certain times of day one would see unfortunate things. One morning on my way to my school I saw a burned body beside the road. My first up close one. Later that day I went to my favorite curry place for lunch. Usually one just orders " rice & curry " and they bring whatever curries they have that day. Well, they brought a meat curry and as soon as I looked at it I saw that body and something happened way deep inside my soul. I knew an understanding that we are all connected. I understood that that meat was like the body and like me and like my cat back home and I could no more eat that than I could lean over and take a living bite of the person sitting next to me at the curry place. After I got back to the States I learned more about our terrible cruel agri-business practices and learned more and more reasons to not eat or buy meat. > > What do you enjoy about being a vegetarian? Beans! Love beans - could have rice & beans every day! > > What tips do you suggest to new vegetarians? Start from where you know & get a good cookbook. If you like spaghetti with meat try a nice marinara. Guest guest
Hello all! I'm new here so its the perfect opportunity to answer this question of the week... > Where are you from(be as vague or specific as you choose)? I'm from Australia! > What helped you consider being a vegetarian? The travelling I did two years ago. I went to a ten thousand acre cattle and goat ranch and saw injustices to the animals there. Plus I had a horrible feeling when I ate meat, and I also developed chronic fatigue syndrome so severely that I could only shuffle or crawl around slowly with pain in my limbs. That pain and energy lack is lifting now, and I have a lot less toxins in my system. > What do you enjoy about being a vegetarian? The diet is so rich in nutrients! I am nearly vegan - I eat honey and eggs, and avoid dairy - I am also lactose intolerant. The almost vegan diet is so much better and healthier than my diet last winter - its winter over in Oz now. I enjoy the warming effects of veg foods that don't make the system sluggish. I enjoy the richness of combining tofu and savoury or sweet. I love being inventive and learning new things about combinations. > What tips do you suggest to new vegetarians? Eat what you know how to cook. Cook easy recipes if you are put off by the more complex ones. Simply roasting vegies and adding a fresh dip whizzed up is that good to eat and easy as anything!! Use your imagination and make the most of your vegies and protein mains. Remember that protein is necessary for your muscles to exist! They dwindle if they are not given protein. I had a protein absorption problem which accounted for some of my chronic fatigue syndrome. The herbalist gave me the best treatment and now I can absorb protein more easily!! Check with a knowledgeable holistic healer if your diet is not working for you and learn how to combine foods for best energy and nutrition. blessed be Duirbeannachd
Guest guest
Cassie, Actually Portage Lake is in Summit County and about 35 minutes from my house. I'm very close to West Branch, 2 minutes, and Craig Beach, 5 minutes. Enjoying ubtleties of color, texture, and flavor that are masked to carnis; feeling just satisfied after meals instead of feeling stuffed; clearer conscience about my footprint on the planet; greater peace of mind about the wholesomeness of what I put into my body. > What tips do you suggest to new vegetarians? 1. Vegetarianism and veganism are lifestyles. If you are a veggie or a vegan you already know this, but others around you may not quite understand. Clearly and firmly - but gently - make it known to your loved ones that vegetariansim (or veganism) is what your ARE, not a " diet " you cheat on from time to time. ( " No, Mom - I'm sorry - but I won't be eating your Christmas t*rkey this year... " ) 2. If you are ready to be a veggie you will slip into it rather easily, and will probably surprise yourself at how quickly you become accustomed to not eating m**t. Early on I found myself picking ch*ck*n out of my wife's stir fry one evening. I had intended to eat it, but to my surprise I couldn't tolerate having it in my mouth. That's when I knew for certain that this journey is for me.
