Anyone have a suggestion for a good substitute for fennel? We rode into town this morning and there was none at the store and no one there could think of something that would be a good flavor replacement. > >

Guest guest
For me it is shiitake mushrooms! I love all other mushrooms, but those are just nasty tasting and are so rubbery in texture. I don't mind dishes that have shiitakes cooked in it, but I pick them out and push them off to the side of the plate. I love mint! hahahaha ~ PT ~ , " DonnaLilacFlower " <thelilacflower wrote: > > For me it's mint. Guest guest
I used to detest mint too, just like olives. I love olives now, and I like mint in some things. Just some things, like mint chocolate ice-cream. hugs, Chanda - DonnaLilacFlower Monday, August 18, 2008 11:17 AM Re: flavors we don't like ~lol~ For me it's mint. Guest guest
I've been reading all this exchange with amusement and thinking, " This must be the unofficial 'Question of the Week'! " At first I thought, " There's nothing I won't try and no flavors I just HATE! " --then I got to thinking and....CUSTARD came to mind! LOL! Yep! Custard! When I was very young, I remember my mom making a LOT of " custard " for our family. I guess she thought that it was some sneaky way to " make " my brother and me " eat something nutritious " , i.e., eggs and milk. As a kid, I could NOT eat scrambled (or any other kind, except hard-boiled) eggs, and at about the age of 4 or 5, I totally could not get milk down my throat unless it had chocolate in it. So Mom made these custards...and usually it was NOT " custard pie " , but custard made in these little " egg-poaching " small cups or dishes. And Mom was not into using a lot of " flavor " in her cooking anyway, so what we got was something slightly sweet, vanilla-ish, and with maybe a dash of cinnamon and maybe ground nutmeg sprinkled on top. At first, I remember I LIKED " custard " ...then, one day, bored with my food and idly stabbing at the custard with my spoon, I noticed how it " sliced " (like gelatin) and then got all watery where the sliced place was--suddenly, that totally GROSSED me out. And at the same time, I noticed how the taste left that " milk " flavor in my mouth--which, to this day, is the main reason I cannot drink fluid milk! Custard suddenly became my least-favored (I will avoid it at all costs!) food. Funny thing, though--I love " frozen custard " and will eat it and not ice cream. I like yogurt, cheese, and all other " dairy " foods. I eat eggs as well--but if they are scrambled--eggs or tofu or anything of similar bland-ness--they HAVE to have a LOT of seasonings, pepper, tabasco, cheese or chopped up veggies added to taste like something I want to eat. Same for quiche. My DH has BEGGED me to make him a " custard pie " , and I have never done so--I am too afraid I would make something like Mom put in front of us as kids--and I could not BEAR the thought that I had " made " such a thing myself! My DH says he would LIKE this bland flavored treat--but for right now, I don't think I have the stomach to attempt it! --Laura B., in Illinois
