From Dane101 - Wisconsin? Submitted by Nicole on Wed, 2006-06-14 00:34. Food | Restaurants | Vegan Variant With Nicole posting her vegan specific review of restaurants on a regular weekly basis, we thought it would be handy to give her a special category button. From now on you can click on "Vegan Variant" above and you will be brought to a page featuring all of Nicole's reviews! Madison's State Street has a serious panoply of locally owned and ethnically diverse restaurants. Closer to the end of the street is Kabul. As it is rare to find Middle Eastern (specifically Afghanistan) fare in Wisconsin, I was excited to give this restaurant a try, also assuming vegan/vegetarian options would be abound. Oh how wrong I was. On a positive note, the layout and decor of Kabul is inviting, relaxed, and spaced well for intimacy-purposes. There are both booths and chaired-tables with linen table cloths. There are green plants and high, wooden dividers to create more coziness and separation. It is not blase casual, but rather slightly more upscale. However, despite the pleasant atmosphere, the food and service were quite the opposite. After spilling water on my

boyfriend's lap and being a major space cadet, our waitress took our order after a pretty decent wait post-being-seated (despite there not being that many people in there). She sounded confused and was flustered the whole time she was interacting with our table of five. Perhaps it was her first time waiting tables ever... in her entire life... and so I will temporarily move on to the menu..... There were *two* vegan options. One being quite pricey and escaping my memory; the other being more reasonably priced, and what I ordered: vegetarian vegetable cous cous that came with either soup or salad. The soup choice was nowhere near vegan, so I opted for the salad... minus the dressing, which also was not vegan. Luckily, there was oil and vinegar on the table to remedy this.Bread is served on each table as an appetizer, however not being certain of vegan-ness, I skipped it and placed all bets on the salad. My boyfriend's parents and sister are not vegan,

however, and did enjoy the bread. The waitress brought the soups and salads out and managed again to spill on my boyfriend's lap yet again, however this time with hot soup. Nothing better than spilling boiling hot, meat-filled soup on a vegan's lap. Luckily for the waitress, my boyfriend is extremely laid back and just shrugged it off--however, because of this, the waitress did not seem to notice or apologize. The salad was mediocre. I really don't have much to say about lettuce, carrots, and tomatoes with my own sprinkling of a makeshift dressing. According to my boyfriend's family, the soup was good, but since it is not vegan or even vegetarian, it is no matter here... The main course luckily came without a blueprint left on my boyfriend's pants. And Reader, can I be absolutely frank with you? Thanks... The vegetable cous cous was one of the worst meals I've had 1. ordered out and 2. from an ethnic restaurant. Honestly, the only reason

I ate as much of it as I did was because my boyfriend's parents took us out and I would have felt bad. The cous cous was overcooked. The sauce was not even a sauce, but a light-colored mess of... watery water. It looked and tasted like the liquid that first comes out of a can of diced tomatoes, minus the tomatoes. The vegetables were drowning in the disarray, save a few atop an island of cous cous in the center. These were not even that good, simply more edible than the rest. There was no flavor or abundance of any texture aside from water and water saturation with a trace of sodium. I sincerely hope the place just had a case of bad luck that day at that time. The presentation, taste and texture were vehemently awful. The boyfriend's family seemed pleased with their meals.... Hence, my conclusion: If you are vegan (or even vegetarian), skip Kabul and go elsewhere. For the price of such a dish (and service), it's just not worth it. 541

Just talking about Discordianism... a sort of deliberately invented spoof religion (although some people now take it seriously). They have their own calendar with 5 months of 73 days each... we're currently in the middle of Confusion, which is followed by Beaurocracy. I forget what the other months are now. They have a 5 day week, which is based on the 5 main elements of the religion: Sweet Morn, Boom Time, Pungen Day, Prickle Prickle & Setting Orange.... if you search on the web you can find all the details...
