Guest guest
My husband use to eat the same as your husband. However, after seven years, he has progressed to the point where I buy no meat at all and cook vegetarian at home. If he wants meat, he buys a frozen dinner for lunch. I have found some alternatives such as LightLife Burrito and Taco crumbles, as an example, that he really likes. He also likes the Morningstar Farms Chik Patties. I told him that I didn't feel comfortable buying meat and he told me to go ahead and eat according to my convictions and he would take care of himself if he didn't like what I cooked. So far, he hasn't had a complaint. :-) ---- Monday, July 01, 2002 9:36:26 AM New Person Hello everyone, my name is Johnna and I recently became a vegetarian again. I am lacto-ovo, and getting back on a health kick after years of not eating the way people should. I have a questions for those who are married or have a spouse that isn't a vegetarian? How does it work. I see problems due to cooking dinner groceries or whatever. My hubby won't touch a green vegetable, and eats mostly fast food, hamburgers, pizza, etc. Do you guys have conflicts over the different diets? Guest guest
Boy do we ever! LOL It grows tiresome cooking 2 meals and sometimes I get tired of eating his side dishes...lol So I don't do veg full time any more. I'm trying to force myself back into it. And my dh is doing really well at trying new things, but it took some time. If you are in a position to have a garden try it. My hubby was/is more willing to try things we grow. Guest guest
my wife (of 18yrs) and two boys (tween & teen) are not veggies, but i've been a lacto-ovo veggie for about twenty-two yrs, w/out problems or conflicts... sometimes i cook the entire meal, which i enjoy, but my wife doesn't - because i tend to mess up her kitchen she does like when i bbq, which we do often this time of yr... normally my wife makes a healthy, well balanced meal, and i cook my veggie stuff (soy, eggwhites, wheat gluten, etc...) which usually relates to or matches whatever their main course is... i shop for my stuff at a local health-food store or order some of it online along w/ our normal groceries... both boys will eat my veggie stuff sometimes, but my wife won't - and i never try to convince her to " just try it " ... attitude is important - i tend to be one of those non-evangelical veggies - i think it's very right for me, but it's my personal decision and not one to be force feed to others when i'm asked why i am one, which is often, i say - take a little bit of every reason you've heard before and i probably can relate to all of them - but mostly i just feel right being one... --- Johnna <jsmith1976 wrote: > Hello everyone, my name is Johnna and I recently > became a vegetarian again. Guest guest
Mike, I like your response to questions about why you are a vegetarian. I too live in a " mixed " family. When I decided to go veg about a decade ago, I thought it only fair if I took over the cooking in our house. My wife generally likes the meals I prepare and gets her " dose " of meat by eating out or from things she prepares for herself. This arrangement has been good for us, not least because it made me appreciate what a pain it is to put a meal on the table day after day. Guest guest
Hi Johnna, I hope that your positive changes become more of a " kick " for you although it must be difficult in your living arrangement. I have consciously chosen to live in a meat free zone since 1985. I just don't like the smell of burgers and chicken. My guests and I will eat out if they need meat. I changed diet when my wife and I divorced and the kids became my responsibility... We talk about such things on the wvegans list (world vegans/vegetarians) Megan posted it in bookmarks... I see problems due to cooking dinner groceries or whatever...Do you guys have conflicts over the different diets?<< Johnna, I was veggie/vegan for 7 yrs before I met my wife, and a meat-free home was a condition of marriage. For us, the differences seemed to be no big deal. If she wanted meat, we or she simply planned a meal out because at home she knew there would never be any meat. I relaxed my vegan rules as a compromise, but over the years, pressure from her family has been unbelievably intense. Plus, their willingness to accommodate my diet in their home was pretty minimal at best. After 14 years, she decided the pressure was too much and filed for divorce one day without ever voicing an objection. What's my message to you? Choosing anything that's contrary to the habits/customs of those around you carries a risk that you'll also be in the sad situation of choosing between your desire for good health or those who claims to love you. And believe me, that's not a very good place to be. Dave
Guest guest
Sounds like a family good to be away from. My parents have always been supportive of my sister's & my choices, even if they didn't agree. Even if they weren't, I would never allow them to be that way to me, I would halt it quickly. oneal wrote: >>I have a questions for those who are married or have a spouse that isn't a vegetarian? Guest guest
Well the problem took care of itself anyway. I just don't allow people to treat me badly, family or not. And I don't care if I keep the peace. If they're jerks, they get what they deserve. My sister once said something though that I live by. You do what you can with the knowledge you have at the time & that's all anyone can do. And that's what you did. Really it justs sounds like a bad match all around & you're better off. oneal wrote: >>>>...pressurefrom her family has been unbelievably intense. Guest guest
Hi Johanna, Welcome to the group! I figure we all only get to go through this lifetime once (that we know of for sure), and however the adults around me want to eat is fine with me. I had a male friend convert to vegetarianism for my sake and he just didn't feel good. He did a lot better when he went back to his meat diet. Each person has to figure out for themselves what makes them feel good. To try to control what others around you eat is asking for problems with them; it's better for everyone to respect each other. I know I eat the way I do because it makes me feel much better -- but that doesn't mean my diet would make everyone feel better. If you serve good veggie dishes, meat eaters can often learn to enjoy them. One option is to make things (salads, pasta dishes, rice dishes, etc.) for yourself, and put chopped meat in a bowl on the table for those who would like to add it. Hang in there and enjoy. Life is too short not to! Melinda
