Guest guest
Hi Diana, for a fairly inexpensive dehydrator, I know raw foodists who use the American Harvest dehydrator with temperature control. The temperature control is very important, don't buy one of the cheap ones without it. The American harvest with temp. control is available at Walmarts, and walmart.com, I'm not sure where else. They like it because you can also remove/add trays to it, and buy additional trays. Legumes should be soaked and sprouted before using/eating. Debra --- Diana <laurelai3 wrote: > Hi all. Guest guest
Forgot to mention that dehydrator is only about $50, so it's a great choice for the money. Guest guest
Thanks for the info on the dehydrator! I realize how silly the question about the legumes sounded. I am not really sure what I even meant by it. I guess I was just not sure if legumes were even " allowed " on a raw food diet. Thanks! Guest guest
It wasn't a silly question at all. I'm still learning too, so I know how you feel! Debra --- " Diana P. Guest guest
It seems easiest to say " my doctor has advised me not to eat meat for health reasons " . Non vegs are more accepting of this explanation. Meg was " grilled " (lame pun, sorry) at a recent graduation party about being veg - one woman wondered what her mother thought of her eating habits. I wish I could have seen their faces when she said " my mom's vegetarian too! " Cyndy

Guest guest
I just don't understand why people care that I don't eat meat... it drives my boss crazy he is so offended by it even though I have never talked about it to him. He even questioned me at lunch today in front of a group of people because Whole Foods won't sell lobsters anymore. He said what does it matter if they are comfortable on " death row " . I just ignored him and continued with the conversation I was already having. I mean I don't ask him why he wears lumberjack shirts everyday do I or why does he have a dumb haircut? Why does he care what I eat for dinner... I am not cooking for him! Whitney --- moonspritetopaz <moonspritetopaz wrote: > We certainly have no problems when asked about being > vegetarian. Guest guest
-Whitney, For some reason your boss feels threatened or judged by your choices. That is 'his' problem. It is the same with people who smoke or over endulge in alcohol. I recently met a guy and when he found out that I didn't smoke and was a Vegetarian he said " this won't work for us,my friends will be intimidated by you and feel like they are being judged for their bad habits " . Funny ! I could care less what other's eat and hardly even notice. Naturally I would not be around someone who smoked but I try not to judge anyone. I try to live by example only. Hoping that when people see how healthy I am and how good I feel they will ask me how I do it. They often do and I then tell them. This actually happened to me last year in a store in PA..The sales person asked for my ID and when I showed it she said " this can't be right the date of birth is 1941 " ..When I assured her that it was my ID she called other employees over to see it and me. Now is that a hoot or what? When she asked me how I do it I said " I have been a Vegetarian for many years why not give it a try " This really happened . Hope it doesn't seem like bragging. Guest guest
I have only been a vegetarian (now going Vegan) a short time with an occasional slip when nothing else was available to eat. Apple B's has nothing vegetarian that I could see and that's where everyone wanted to eat so I choose the grilled salmon I need some restaurant tips for sure! We ate out at a very nice Japanese restaurant a week or so ago and I had a very nice meal. I felt almost attacked by the other people around the table, however. I didn't make an issue of what I ordered but was questioned by people. One lady asked " So you don't eat ANY meat? " I said no I don't..... and then she said " So you just ate vegetables grilled on the same grill as meat was cooked! " I really didn't know what to say as I am a fairly new vegetarian and haven't read up enough yet I guess????? I said to her I was eating vegetarian for health reasons not political reasons. My vegetable were actually grilled almost first. The chef cooked the shrimp and then my vegetables. I really didn't know what to say..... I have actually decided to go Vegan after reading The China Study recently. This same lady also stated she didn't eat meat that had 4 legs.... she eats fish and chicken. My question is or request actually..... Can anyone recommend any good books for becoming a vegan? How to respond to people, recipes, ect.... People (including relatives)are making me feel like I am doing something strange and they are making this very difficult for me. I joined this list because I think I need some education on the life style that I have chosen. -- Best regards, Vicki vickisdesigns

Guest guest
Welcome Vicki, I guess you hail from across the water? dont be discouraged, take a higher moral path and feel better for it. You will get nothin but support from us on here. Feel free to ask us anything....shoe size, favourite smells, how heavy a years production of belly button fluff weighs? we can answer them all. On a serious note, eat before you go out that way if you and your mates go out for the night and you cant eat anything without a face, then at least you wont be hungry. I sometimes carry snacks in my pockets, little vegan bars, packets of nuts etc.......my wife is a carnie ( no she doesnt work the ghost train ), and my kids are only vegie not vegan............so a lot of the time they want to stop at pizza hate or the likes, and I go without, but it doesnt bother me none, because I wont deprive them as believe in live and let live. I hate people who are preachy so I dont preach to others. I still get the piss taken out of me in work, but I`m used to it now. There are trillions of books out there, unfortunately I dont know if they are available over thar............ The Valley Vegan.............Vicki Becker <vickisdesigns wrote: I have only been a vegetarian (now going Vegan) a short time with an occasional slipwhen nothing else was available to eat. Guest guest
Hi Vicki Welcome to Vegan Chat. Don't feel too upset. Everyone makes mistakes. It is difficult to start with, but becomes easier as you go along. I don't know any books that would help but I am sure people on here will be able to chat about all the problems you encounter.
