Hi Fraggle!

We very rarely eat out, cannot afford it often. But my new fave

Tis about it.

Hey Fraggle, I would suggest that you save yourself time and embarrasment by not eating in pubs.( I know, but most if not all the beer on tap is off limits - bottles are generally the only option ) Best bets are cheaper Indian Restaurants ( most use vegetable Ghee - only the more expensive ones use butter ghee, and Chinese restauarants. Thai are normally more expensive over here, and again you have to mention the fish sauce issue. Avoid chip shops as they fry everything in the same oil. Let us know where yer goin and I will do some research for you........... Hi Fraggle

Mine is The Riverside Vegetaria in Kingston Upon Thames (South of London).

I like the healthy food, the range available, the service, and the view. I

also like it because it is not alternative, which may seem a strange thing

to say. I don't mind eating at any veggie cafe/restaurant but mostly they

are cheap and dingy looking.

Hi Fraggle

Well, My very favourite is The George in Brighton... good, " basic " vegan

food.... although it is a bit of a trek from Bristol.

Round my local area, 'twould be a choice between Cafe Maitreya (if I'm

feeling rich), the One Stop Thali (if I'm feeling like something spicy), or

the Kebele (if I'm feeling like good cheap food). I've heard good things

about Cafe Kino, which opened about a month ago, and which I have to try out

as soon as I get a chance!

Yes! Don't forget that the exchange rate isn't too good for US folks visiting the UK right now. Never been to Demuths, but Maitreya (which is also expensive) is in Pounds what Gratitude is in Dollars.....

Now if you happen to be around on a Sunday evening, and can make your way to Bristol (there's a cheap and friendly train service from Bath), you would love the Kebele - it's the centre of local "underground" activity - houses several local squatting collectives, is the venue for AR group meetings, political activist type things, Dissent, Environmentalist groups, and everything that goes along with that sort of thing.... on Sunday evening they do a cafe with exceptionally good food - they ask for a donation of £1 or whatever you can afford (and it's considered polite to do your own washing up after you've eaten)... and you'd get to meet the more friendly element of UK society (you know, the sort of folks who'll probably be the first to be arrested under anti-terrorism laws)....

Golden lotus in oakland..good vegan thai, and they are slowly opening a slew of

similiar places across the bay area

Cafe Gratitude, but only for the deserts! (berkeley)

Felinni's...still dang good pizza..and they do go out of their way to bring in

organics and make things ok fer vegans

(berkeley)

In SF

Herbivore...tho they do have a few..umm...menu items that certainly could be

better (like the burritos!)

and Love and Haight...fer sandwiches

If you ever go to Devon there is a good Thai restaurant that has a whole

Hi Fraggle >yeah/...but can it be more expensive then Millenium er Cafe Gratitude over here... Yes! Don't forget that the exchange rate isn't too good for US folks visiting the UK right now. Never been to Demuths, but Maitreya (which is also expensive) is in Pounds what Gratitude is in Dollars..... Now if you happen to be around on a Sunday evening, and can make your way to Bristol (there's a cheap and friendly train service from Bath), you would love the Kebele - it's the centre of local "underground" activity -

houses several local squatting collectives, is the venue for AR group meetings, political activist type things, Dissent, Environmentalist groups, and everything that goes along with that sort of thing.... on Sunday evening they do a cafe with exceptionally good food - they ask for a donation of £1 or whatever you can afford (and it's considered polite to do your own washing up after you've eaten)... and you'd get to meet the more friendly element of UK society (you know, the sort of folks who'll probably be the first to be arrested under anti-terrorism laws).... I am certain that I have diligently checked them out yes.

And then we even double checked with Peter's dish when we went there.

Hi Peter

Colin tells me I've made a mistake - the Thai restaurant was in Taunton in Somerset. Sorry - I didn't meant to tease.

If you are in Exmouth there is a vegetarian restaurant in Exeter - Herbies in North Street. We have eaten there three times. The food is good. It is based more on English type food, and pastas etc. There may have been one curry. The deserts were good. The prices were medium. It is not posh like the Thai restaurant, but very pleasant.

If you can travel to Plymouth, which is about 50 miles away, Veggie Perrins is well worth a visit. It is quite a large Indian restaurant run by a Ugandan whose family came here to escape from Idi Amin. He is really nice and chatty, and would change a a meal to make it vegan.

In the range of poshness, the Vegetaria is probably about a third of the way up the scale i.e. nice but not overly posh. A main course is about £6-£8, which I don't think is too expensive for healthy food. You get a 10% discount with a Vegetarian Society card. I really can't imagine anyone feeling self-conscious there. Ask Peter - he has been with us on a couple of occasions.

Good, never said it was, just sayin I dont relish the idea of forking out big bucks to be self concious at places that are.

Re: Fave restaurants

Cheap and dingy lookin aint a problem for me.........in fact I tend to feel intimidated by posh places ( not that I can afford to go to any), but the few I have been to make me feel uneasy...........

Hi FraggleMine is The Riverside Vegetaria in Kingston Upon Thames (South of London).I like the healthy food, the range available, the service, and the view. Ialso like it because it is not alternative, which may seem a strange thingto say. I don't mind eating at any veggie cafe/restaurant but mostly theyare cheap and dingy looking.Jo-"fraggle" Thursday, July 06, 2006 4:05 PM Fave restaurants> So....> since i'll be in jolly ol England next year...> Wot is everyones fave place t ogo out to eat?> and why?>> and, fer ya'll everywhere else (hi nikki!), wot are yer fave places to eatout?>> :)>> cheers> fraggle>>>>> "NOTICE: Due to Presidential Executive Orders, the National SecurityAgency may have read this email without warning, warrant, or notice.
