Guest guest
One thing I can assure you is that being vegan does not mean no more eating out. I was vegan for a couple of years, and I ate out frequently. It does mean you will have to be more watchful when you eat out, and your eating out will be more limited. When I was vegan, I usually went to Asian restaurants or to places that I knew had a few vegan dishes or vegan options. Also, I recently attended a wedding where a vegetarian plate was put together just for me. The server brought me a chicken plate, and I was just going to suck it up and eat just the vegetables, and my SO was kind enough to ask if a vegetarian plate was available. The server then brought me a plate with no dead animal, and extra veggies- asparagus, sweet potatoes, yellow squash. The only thing that was not at least apparently vegan was the tomato with cheese in it, and I ended up not eating that. We also had a marvelous salad. So please don't think that becoming vegan will mean the end of eating out or celebrating with your family. Your family, in their love for you, will I am sure meet you halfway; instead of pizza hut, maybe you could all go out to Super Salad. (Incidentally, my vegan roommate used to order her pizzas with no cheese.) Veganism will not doom you to a future of eating alone at home. However, neither must you be convinced that being vegan will save animals from wretched and depressed states. I get both my milk and eggs from farms that I have visited or investigated. I know that the animals there are well cared for. Not all animals that produce eggs and milk are terribly treated! When I was a kid, we grew our own eggs, and our chickens had pretty good lives- shelter when they wanted it, the run of the farm, and free food If you want to make your diet more cruelty-free, you can check into the sources from which you buy your dairy and egg products. (The same with honey, btw.) You can cook cruelty-free meals for your sister and the rest of your family. You can also, in your daily life, avoid animal products such as leather, feathers, wool, etc. In thse ways, you can avoid partaking of the profits of cruelty to cows and chickens (and sheep!) and avoid contributing to systems which promote those particular cruelties to those creatures. These are just some ideas. If you truly want to be vegan, then go for it. You can always try it, and then if it doesn't work for you, return to lacto-ovo. - Priscilla Kevin Smith <thatballguy wrote: Celebrating with my sister and enjoying times with my family, or sparing another animal from a depressed and wretched existence (which might still exist in that state whether or not I am vegan). Guest guest
I feel your pain. Well, your concern anyway. I too have been thinking along those lines, but I am not vegan because I am a selfish (insert degrading word for females). I love my shoes too much, but I'm not that type of girl. So it makes me wonder, how shallow am I? God strike me with a lightning bolt! You, how ever, have genuine concerns over the comfort of people around you and missing opportunities and special moments with your loved ones. I am jealous of you for being so giving. Cheers That " Ball " Guy, Coco A.K.A. the selfish whiney over loved and spoiled rotten evil person (and I'm not putting myself down because I'm laughing right now). Kevin Smith [thatballguy] Monday, September 06, 2004 7:56 PM Considering Veganism Well, I've been a lacto-ovo veggie for 8 months now, and am loving it. For the past two months or so I've been considering going vegan, as I'm not that attached to milk and egg products, and would like to completely detach myself from animal products. However, I was thinking about what that would mean for me. No going to pizza hut with my family, no more ramen noodles, no more eating out basically, no eating at my sister's wedding. . . . .and I'm wondering if it's really worth it? I'm kind of torn in a dillema: what's more important to me? Celebrating with my sister and enjoying times with my family, or sparing another animal from a depressed and wretched existence (which might still exist in that state whether or not I am vegan). Just wanting some other thoughts on this, as it's getting taxing on my mind. Guest guest
well, i guess it all depends on why you want to do it. for me, it was worth it, because once i did the research, i feel like a hypocrite buying into the dairy and egg industry; i am, and have always been, a veg*n for moral reasons. i admit that i do miss " real " pizza occasionally, and the apple pancakes at the original pancake house in chicago, and that it can make overseas travel and dinner at other people's houses more complex. however, when it all comes down to it, i have to stick with what i believe, and that's what gets me through it. if i did give in and have that slice of pizza, i'd get very sick from it, anyways-- my body doesn't seem to be able to process dairy any more (experience from having eaten it accidentally). just my .02. good luck with it! http://www.flawlessfitness.com http://www.melodysmusic.net
Guest guest
Ask Pizza Hut to leave off the cheese, they'd do it. I just finished making " pizza " with ciabatta for a base and tomato sauce and soy cheese in the microwave. Also, Top Ramen oriental flavor is vegan, Maruchan is not. And like someone said, restaurants can be done. Chinese restaurants are among my favorites -- Buddha's delights etc. , " Kevin Smith " <thatballguy> wrote: > Well, I've been a lacto-ovo veggie for 8 months now, and am loving it. > For the past two months or so I've been considering going vegan, as > I'm not that attached to milk and egg products, and would like to > completely detach myself from animal products. Guest guest
Kevin Only you can make that choice - and for whatever reasons are important to you. I went raw vegan in one fell swoop - one day a traditional SAD diet, the next raw vegan and I haven't looked back. I go to restaurants with my husband (he eats traditional), I go to family gatherings, and it has worked out fine. I'm finding folks can kinda deal with Vegan, but they really freak when I mention I'm Raw Vegan. But it still all works out. But the important thing is to make a choice that works for you. If vegan appeals to you, then do it. Be very patient with yourself. I think switching food/diet habits is a gradual thing for most folks. If you are in a situation that eating something outside of vegan is available, and you choose to do that ... well, note it and move on. Next day go back to vegan and carry on. enjoy the journey ... cheers terry , " Kevin Smith " <thatballguy> wrote: > Well, I've been a lacto-ovo veggie for 8 months now, and am loving it. > For the past two months or so I've been considering going vegan, as > I'm not that attached to milk and egg products, and would like to > completely detach myself from animal products. Guest guest
Hi all, I just joined this group so hello to everyone!! I am considering switching to veganism mostly for health reasons. Does anyone have any suggested reading or websites that I should look at that would help the transition or just help with planning meals in the beginning? Also, any suggested reading is welcomed. Thank you!!

Guest guest
Congrats shani, I figure you must be vegetarian at this time. If you're hooked on cheese for example, you can consider veg oils in your sauces (olive oil, corn oil, etc..) to substitute that lipid. All the best to you. shani_bugg2815 <shannon.eichmann wrote: Hi all,I just joined this group so hello to everyone!!I am considering switching to veganism mostly for health reasons. Guest guest
Hi - and welcome to the group. I would recommend a book by Stephen Walsh, called Plant Based Nutrition. The best website for recipes is the International Vegetarian Union, but there are lots of others. Websites: IVU; Vegan Chef; Vegan Cooking; Vegan Mania; The Vegan Society; Vegan Village; Vegan Family House; VegWeb; VIVA, Animal Aid. Guest guest
Good question, I guess I could have mentioned where I was from when I sent the previous post. I am actually living in College Station, TX. This is mostly the reason for joining an online chat group because there are few vegetarians here and even fewer vegans. Thanks to those of you who have replied with suggestions. , fraggle <EBbrewpunx wrote: > > greetings and welcome > there are a billion websites and books > first off, where do you hail from? as that would make make it easier to nudge you toward different things! > > cheers > fraggle > > > >shani_bugg2815 <shannon.eichmann > >Jul 31, 2006 5:33 PM > > > > considering veganism > > > >Hi all, > > > >I just joined this group so hello to everyone!! > > > >I am considering switching to veganism mostly for health reasons. Guest guest
we have a flock of wild green parrots here too. I saw them once at the airport and then another time near the library. they are so beautiful to look at, and so intelligent, there are mostly green with a little red on top. (i think) there are lots of theories on how these birds came to the states some say on a boat from south america, others say escaped pets probably a conbination of all theories. last I heard the San Francisco Flock numbered about 160 + birds. , fraggle <EBbrewpunx wrote: > > it was a good movie > > yeah..seen em a bunch.. > there are a couple different flocks > and in oakland..and berkeley... > > > >Anouk Sickler <zurumato > >Aug 7, 2006 11:49 PM > > > > Re: considering veganism > > > >I just saw the movie, > >the Parrots of Telegraph Hill http://www.wildparrotsfilm.com/ > >it is very touching. > >have you ever seen these Wild parrots flying around in San Francisco? > > > > >
