Guest guest
Hi Deborah, That is wonderful, congratulations! What was threatening them that you saved them from? We always have a lot of stick insects in our backyard. This year was the first time ever that we say them as little babies. The smallest that I saw was literally about a quarter of an inch. It was a lot of fun discovering them in the garden, especially hiding in the strawberries, every week and watching how they had grown. Last year as I was tending my tomatoes, a rather large one came flying out at me and had me screaming it scared me so bad! He/she was about 7 inches in length and I never saw him coming til he flew at my face! LOL Nikki , " Deborah Barrass " <deborahbarrass wrote: > > We have acquired (saved from death) 3 stick insects. Guest guest
Thanks Nikki I feel, somehow, you live somewhere other than the cool climes of England. The stick insects which I have are in an old fish tank, there are 3. If i released them here they would surely die ! So - I've given them privet leaves and ivy which I spray 1-2 times a day with water. They are happy to come out and run up our arms. Newspaper in the bottom of the tank. But I feel i should be doing more to cheer them up from being captive. By the way I did once rescue a sick and dehydrated wasp with drops of water sugar (not sure what it thought of that) then place it in a warm sunny spot on the windowsill. Watched it while it fed - fascinating - then slowly spread its wings before flying away. i could have cried. My kids aged 4 and 6 thought i'd really lost it ! Guest guest
Hi Jo ROFL! Shhhh.... don't tell the insects where my hiding spot is! Last night Zak and I watched a huge grasshopper crawl up the bedroom window screen. Poor " little " guy was missing one of his back legs and I fear he may not be able to get away from many predators that way. Then in response to Reno's frantic barking in the yard, we saw two baby bunnies on the front lawn hopping and playing. Normally when they see us they stop and freeze, but this time they kept at it. Guest guest
Hi Deborah~ You guessed correctly, I am in way too hot and humid Chicago, Illinois, USA right now. I only asked because I wondered if something had happened to them for you to rescue them. How do they normally survive there when it gets colder? Forgive my ignorance on it, but I do not know the cycles of these insects. That is amazing with the wasp! I myself could not have done it, I am deadly afraid of wasps. Guest guest
Hi Nikki :-) Poor grasshopper. I expect they are very large where you live. Ours are usually about one and a half inches long. The bunnies were lucky Reno was not in the garden. It's lovely to see them play. BB Jo - " earthstrm " <earthstorm Tuesday, August 08, 2006 11:42 AM Re: Stick Insects > Hi Jo > > ROFL! Guest guest
Hi Jo, I agree, poor little guy. He was about 2 1/2 inches long. Luckily the bunnies were in the front yard so Reno has no access to them. He has been chasing a very brave little baby bunny living in my peppers lately though.
